TWENTY-TWO

The next day, I got to the 23rd Precinct early to meet with Nick and Moses to discuss the murder of Gary and Judy Wentworth. We met in a conference room, where their lieutenant, Patrick Riley, listened as we went over the details of the killings.

After we finished, Riley, a big guy in his fifties, with white hair, gave us his take on things. “It sounds like you need to lean on Jimmy Boyle, although I’m sure he’s covered his tracks and will have an alibi.”

Riley had previously been told about Amy being hired by Judy Wentworth, but didn’t know about Mojo, so I filled him in. I said, “My friend’s associate says he’s on the inside with Boyle’s people. He’s agreed to meet with us today to talk about how to proceed.”

“Let’s see what he has to say and take things from there.” Riley looked at his detectives. “What does the DEA have to say about the doctor that Boyle’s been working with?”

“They have an open case on Dr. Zhmed and his pain clinics, but they haven’t moved forward,” Nick said. “There’s some speculation they’re getting pressure to keep the investigation on hold.”

“Pressure from who?”

“We’re not sure, but Madison has a friend with the FBI who knows someone on the inside.” She looked at me. “Do you think you could ask your friend to meet with us?”

“I’ll give him a call and see what I can set up.”

After our meeting ended, I got Sam on the line. “How are you feeling?” I asked, after learning that he’d been released from the hospital the day before.

“Other than a little pain here and there, I’m feeling almost as good as new. The doctors say I should be released to return to work in a couple weeks, but, to be honest, I feel good enough to return before that.”

“Don’t rush it.” I took a breath and asked about the other thing on my mind. “I don’t suppose there’s any word on Jeffers or his companion?”

“Nothing. My guess is they found a cabin somewhere else in the mountains and are hiding out.”

After discussing that possibility for a moment, I filled him in on the Wentworth murders and explained that the 23rd Precinct was looking into Jimmy Boyle’s involvement and his link to Dr. Zhmed’s pain clinics. “The detectives were wondering if you can come by and talk to them about the DEA’s involvement.”

“I’m free later today. Maybe we could meet for lunch, then I’ll come by the precinct.”

I declined lunch because of our meeting with Amy and Mojo, but agreed to meet him for coffee early in the afternoon. I decided it would also be an opportunity for us to clear the air about his wife’s medical condition.

At noon, Amy and Mojo arrived at the precinct. After introductions, we all met in the same conference room we’d used earlier. The lieutenant had decided not to participate, but made it clear he wanted a complete accounting of what Amy and Mojo had to say.

Amy went first, giving the detectives an overview of Girl Gotcha, her PI business.
