Sue was helping Trevor with his homework, and Allison was whining about not having anything decent to wear. I was home, only the house felt foreign. Sue got up and placed a peck on my cheek. The kids gave me a grander welcome. I headed for a long, scalding shower.

That night, I lay awake for hours, reliving the love I’d made with Carole and how horny it made me still. Then the guilt hit me right in the gut. I winced from a pain more debilitating than my peptic ulcer. Surely, anguish this deep confirmed that I was the worst person on the planet. I popped antacids from the nightstand, but didn’t sleep a wink.

Coincidently, several weeks later Sue broke her ankle tripping over the dog’s leash on the front steps. The water heater died from old age, and the replacement cost a small fortune. Her father found out he had prostate cancer, but thankfully, it wasn’t a death sentence, and my mom needed emergency gallbladder surgery. When I had to put a bucket in the living room where the roof leaked, that clinched it. I was being punished for straying. I nursed Sue back to health, but she just wasn’t in the mood for anything more physical than a foot massage or a scratch up her cast with a knitting needle. Sue managed to hobble around enough to keep up her end of production, as long as I helped get the food in and out of the oven. I had no choice but to be underfoot. She couldn’t manage without me and made sure to finish up before I made the deliveries. There was never a question as to why I was gone so long, because she was usually asleep by the time I came home.

Carole took care of my every sexual need. I was happy and felt I had the best of both worlds, except the boundaries blurred significantly each and every day until I didn’t recognize myself or have a clue what I wanted anymore. The frustration of being apart from Carole, and the guilt when I slept beside Sue made me short-tempered and irritable. I would have left me if I could.
