Chapter Nine

An incessant alarm shrilled near Gabby’s head. She licked her cracked lips and coerced her eyes open. Through the slits she saw Landon sleeping in a chair next to where she lay.

His head rested on his palm, threatening to drop at any moment. The strain of the day was clear by the shade of purple under his eyes.

Her mind buzzed as she searched the room for a clock, trying to remember the ambulance ride to the hospital. It felt like days had passed, though the date on the nurse’s dry erase board said otherwise. The clock read ten-thirty and by the darkness from the single window, Gabby realized she’d been out for about thirty-minutes.

The ride to the hospital had been scary; all she remembered was the paramedics ripping her nightgown to insert an IV and the mask of oxygen drowning out the noise of everything going on around her.

Gabby wasn’t due to deliver for another month, and in that short moment after they were on their way, she panicked. Worried she would lose her baby, the only thing she had left of Parker. She couldn’t control her breathing, and that was when she blacked out.

Landon. She’d done it again, thinking of Parker when he was nowhere around, yet here was a man willing to take on so much of her issues. Gabby knew she didn’t deserve him and had thought many times over the last six months of telling him so.

Gabby looked at Landon, wincing when she saw him staring at her. Guilt, it was an unpleasant feeling.

“Hey, beautiful. How are you feeling?”

“Weak,” Gabby said, taking the hand he offered and placing it under her chin. “What happened?”

Pulling his chair closer to the bed, he sat and said, “You gave us quite the scare. They said you had a panic attack on the way here.”

“The baby? Is the baby going to be okay?” she asked, placing her hand on her swollen belly.

“She’s perfectly fine, though they almost performed an emergency C-section. Once they saw everything was okay with you both, they just let you sleep,” he said, assuring her with a smile.

A daughter? Gabby couldn’t believe she was having a baby girl.

Imagining what her daughter would look like, Parker’s face flashed in her mind, jolting her a little. She had to stop thinking about him. He’s not here. He lost his chance.

Smiling, Gabby placed both hands on her belly, feeling the slight movements and watching the ripples roll across her stomach. She closed her eyes when Landon spoke again.

“Dr. Matthis should be here soon to explain the plan for the birth.”

Panic crept into her chest as she processed what he meant. “Whoa! That panic attack must have done a number on me. I guess I am having a baby tonight. I can’t believe I’m about to be a Mama.”

“Yes, you are,” Landon said proudly. “I’ve called Christina and Jacob, they are on their way. Please don’t be mad but I told Jacob to bring his mother.”

Knowing she was about to meet her baby, Gabby would let nothing ruin her mood.
