“How’ve you been handling his subdrops?” Farid asked the next day when Vee delivered the now-customary basket of pastries.

“His what?”

Farid looked up, coffee halfway to his mouth. “Subdrops. You have been helping him through them, right?”

Vee squirmed in his seat. “I don’t… what are they?”

“Oh Jesus,” Farid said, setting his coffee down. “You mean to tell me you’ve just… let him go through them alone?”

“Through what?” Vee demanded, fury chasing worry through his chest. He’d fucked up, that much was obvious, but how?

“Subspace comes at a price, Vee,” Farid said. “Newton’s third law.”

“Equal and opposite reaction?” Vee said, and then straightened, horrified, as the meaning sank in. “Oh, fuck.”

Farid sipped his coffee. “Yeah.”

“He’s been—fuck, he’s been dropping like that every time?”

“Maybe not every time,” Farid said. “It usually hits after a really intense scene. What happens, once you’re done?”

Vee shrugged helplessly. “He… it takes him awhile to come down sometimes. I help him ground himself, and once he can talk without slurring and prove he’s not going to fall over when he stands up, he usually says he has to go. I’ve asked him to stay, but he won’t—he never stays after a scene.” He folded forward, a hand over his mouth. “How bad do they get?”

“Different for everyone,” Farid said. There was sympathy in his eyes. “But usually the higher they go….”

“The harder they fall,” Vee finished. “Fuck. I have to—”

“Yeah, go,” Farid said, waving him off, and Vee scrambled for the door.
