Chapter Thirteen
Gage tried to pull himself out of the darkness. Burning pain wrenched him back down, suffocating him. He needed to break free, but he couldn’t move. Death laid a heavy hand on him.
Another sound broke through the darkness. Chanting. He didn’t understand the words, but they drew him forward and the mists of darkness began to part as he stepped past the veil of his world into another realm.
The dark clouds began to dissipate. Gage looked around. The landscape was like nothing he'd ever seen. Rolling hills and tall, green grass, and there was a mountain in front of him. He knew he was supposed to climb it. He just didn't know why. He began the journey until he reached the top.
The air was crisp and cool, with just the slightest breeze to brush over his skin. A bright light surrounded him, but the sun wasn't out. His gaze moved across the sky. An eagle flew high above him. The bird’s wingspan was at least five feet wide. He stopped and watched in awe as the bird flew over, circled, then landed on a rock in front of him. He knew there was something he should be doing, but he wasn't exactly sure what it was.
As he walked nearer, the bird watched, as if waiting for him. He sat in front of the eagle, and it was as if their minds, their souls, were blending. He closed his eyes as the eagle cried out, then spread its wings and took flight. He and the bird were one, flying over the land. He saw everything the bird saw, from the small brown mouse that scurried to a bush for cover, to the flowing river below them. He felt the wind on his face and inhaled the fresh air. His vision had been cloudy before, but now it was clear.
They flew for miles over the land, soaring across the sky. A gray wolf ran along with them. Suddenly it was as if the wolf ran through a dark forest. Intense fear filled him. He struggled to go downward, but the Eagle wouldn't let him. He began to wonder if he would see the wolf again, then suddenly, the wolf was running in the light again.
When the eagle landed once more on the rock, the gray wolf was there waiting for them. Somehow he knew the wolf would not attack the eagle. There was a deep bond between the two animals.
The animals disappeared, and his soul joined with his body once more. Deep burning pain enveloped him. He heard a cry of pain and realized it came from him. Immediately, he felt a cool hand upon his forehead, and soothing words whispered in his ear. The pain diminished somewhat, and he was able to drift off to sleep.
