Tane

It’s nearly dark, but I keep working anyway. I’m determined to get this bloody fence fixed before the morning. The light from the kitchen and laundry are casting enough of a glow that I can keep going until the sun really is a memory.

The heat from the day has basically disappeared, and I can sense a dampness starting to brew. Rain could be coming. It’s not a bad thing. The tanks need a top-up.

I wipe the back of my hand over my forehead and adjust the backward cap that’s soaking up the sweat from my hair.

By the time we got home, it was dinnertime and everyone was starving, but Harper was white as a ghost. I refused to let her do anything, and Beck backed me up until she was propped on the couch with her arm on a pillow, watching (or not watching) TV. Willow sat with her, not saying anything—of course—but holding her sister’s hand, so at least that was something.

Beck did a fish and chips run and we ate straight off the paper, crowding around the table and getting our fingers greasy with oil and tomato sauce.

Harper nibbled at her food and eventually caved to pressure halfway through her piece of fish.

“Just go to bed, Harp. Sleep it off. You’ll feel better in the morning.” Beck sent her upstairs.

She shuffled away from the table, and I swear she would have keeled over if the wall hadn’t been there to catch her. It took everything in me not to bolt from my chair and help her up to her room, but she’d already barked at me once when I’d tried to help her out of the car. She didn’t say a word to me on the drive home. It was the longest frickin’ twenty-five minutes of my life.

She was pissed that I told her off.

But she needed to hear it!

I hate the idea of her driving all the way into Rototuna with blood running down her arm. It must have hurt like hell. And the idea of her in pain kills me a little bit. I would have been there for her in a shot. If only she’d let me.

With a grunt, I start hammering in the new pins. I replaced the post. Thankfully, Beck had some precut ones already stored away, so I nicked one of those and got to work. It’s been good to burn off some steam, and by the time Beck saunters out to check on me, I’m actually feeling better, although my simmering anger isn’t far from the surface.

I can feel my stomach knotting as he plants his feet near mine.

“You right, mate? You seem kind of edgy.”

I give him a sideways glance before wiping the sweat from under my nose and picking up another pin.

“She shouldn’t have been fixing this on her own.”

“Yeah. Don’t think she really knew what she was doing.” Beck grinned. “Scared by a chicken. It’s a little funny.”

“It’s not funny,” I snap. “She really hurt herself!”

“Yeah, I know.” His eyebrows pucker as he tries to read me.
