Chapter 33

TEX

Three weeks now they had surveilled Trufant, and his late after-noon trips to the park were his only weak points. He did a similar trip in the morning, but the times varied and the morning daylight could produce a glare. The only issue was which street Trufant would use as he walked home. The man seemed to flip a coin: heads Taber Place, tails Bryant Street, or maybe he let the dog decide.

“He sits there every afternoon, forty minutes to an hour,” Tex said. “Usually, he leaves as the lamp comes on, but not always. Like a cucaracha, he runs from the light.”

“Or he runs from the dark,” JC said.

“I love the dark, JC. La noche es mi amiga.” He looked through the binoculars. “Where did the dog go? The damn thing disappears in the shadows.”

“Ask your friend, maybe the dark took him for you.”

Both men laughed but Tex was nervous. There was something about this cop he didn’t like, and he knew JC was nervous too. “JC, the dog is with that woman on the other side of the park. That dog knows everybody.”

It was late June now, and JC wanted another week of surveillance. He was going to make the hit, so it was his call.

“I think he’s leaving,” JC said. “I bet you a fifty he turns north and then takes a left on Bryant.”

“You’re on, amigo.” He would have picked Bryant Street also, but he let JC take the easy win.

They were both wrong.
