Chapter 25

Ronnie

“Sophie, are you alright?” I rush into the hospital room and see her staring at the ceiling. Her face is emotionless, but her eyes are red-rimmed from crying.

She just nods and gives me a weak smile. When I take her hand and squeeze it, she lets it lie limp in my hand. She’s alive. That’s all that matters.

“I thought I lost you,” I whisper and give her a kiss on her forehead. She continues to stare at the ceiling with glassy eyes for a few seconds before she shifts her gaze at me.

“Did you get any news on Cassandra and Caleb? They won’t tell me anything because we are not family.”

“Caleb is stable. A concussion and some broken bones, but he should be okay.”

“And Cassandra?”

I swallow hard and try to keep my voice even. “She is in surgery. Her side of the car took the brunt of the hit to the wall. She has a bleed in her brain and a nasty break to her leg. They are supposed to bring more news when she gets out of surgery.”

She nods and then frowns. “How did you get them to tell you all of that?”

I lean closer to her and whisper in her ear. She shivers a little, and it makes me grin. She isn't immune to my touch, after all. It must just be the shock from the accident.

“We are each other’s emergency contacts. It’s how we do things. I am listed as their brother and your husband.”

“Must be a great way to steal someone’s medical records too,” she says with sarcasm in her voice. What does she mean by that? Before I can ask, she continues. “Cassandra literally saved my life, Ronnie. The brakes went out and she couldn’t slow the car down. We almost fell down that cliff. The only thing she could do is turn the SUV to have her side hit the wall.” Tears start filling up her eyes again and I squeeze her hand.

“Cassandra has always been strong. She will pull through.”

“Someone is after me, Ronnie. Two people were hurt because of me.”

“Nobody is after you, Sophie.” I gather her in my arms and hold her tight. “None of this is your fault. The blame sits squarely on my shoulders. Your life has been turned upside down the minute you met me, and it has been nothing but chaos and trouble since then.”

“What if Cassandra dies? I will never forgive myself for what happened to her.”

I gently move a strand of hair out of her face and stare down at her. “I know what you’re thinking. I should let you go. Help you relocate somewhere else and forget I ever met you, but… I can’t get myself to do it.”

Her eyes light up and she gives me the first smile I’ve seen from her since I walked through the door.

“Underneath that mafia don exterior, there’s a man made of marshmallow.”

To my surprise, I almost burst out laughing. “You have got to be the only person ever to call me a marshmallow.
