Sample Star Designer Contract Rider

Design contracts on Broadway are subject to the jurisdiction of United Scenic Artists (USA), Local 829. The following contract rider is for a play, the designer has his own corporate loan-out company that provides his services, and the design falls under the USA set classification of Dramatic Single Set. (Plays have different negotiated rates than musicals, and both categories have three subclassifications—for a single set, a multiset, and a unit set with phases—each with its own proscribed minimum fee and advance). As a point of reference for this contract rider, the current (at time of writing) USA minimums for a Dramatic Single Set are a fee of $9,217 and an advance of $2,311, for a combined total of $11,528. The current USA minimum flat royalty, referred to as an additional weekly compensation (AWC), for this design category, prerecoupment, is $332.97.

Having reviewed a number of different contract riders by now, you should begin to see certain similarities in the kinds of issues that they cover—many clauses are standard boilerplate (indemnification, breach and cure, arbitration, right to audit, insurance) while others are individual and negotiable (compensation, billing, house seats, opening night tickets, number of assistant weeks).
