CHAPTER 11

The following weeks flew by in a blur of guests, housekeeping, cooking and keeping the pantry stocked for Caleb. Breakfast conversation with Caleb was usually few and far between. He came, he ate he left. He was deeply involved with his writing, and Sarah never asked how the book was progressing, she could tell from his state of mind. Sarah never saw him on the days she left him a pantry basket. She spent what little free time she had painting. Her first paintings sold within a week, the boost of confidence allowed Sarah to be more experimental with her painting; she tried new techniques, and relished the time spent with her inks and canvasses. When she went back to Savannah no one could ever stop her from painting again. The paintings weren’t selling for much as she was a new artist, but it was enough to keep her cash float healthy. It was early November and winter was fast approaching. Sarah was grateful for the amount inspiration she had from the leaves changing color during the past month. Her landscapes of northern Maine were filled with rich autumn colors, clear blue waters and numerous sunsets over the fall colors. They had sold the quickest, but she had kept one, to remind herself of her time in Blue Hill. With the icy fingers of winter reaching out, the symphony of colors receded. The rich hues that once enticed her, had now become eerie forests, ghostlike trees with branch arms reaching toward the skies. No one would ever be able to take this time away from her. Sarah looked forward to Oak Cottages closing at the end of the week. There weren’t any reservations for the remainder of the week, but she had quite a few last minute bookings in the past month, so she had learned to be prepared for guests at all times. The days Oak Cottages had no guests except for Caleb, she drove until she found a landscape that called to her to be painted. She had left a note on the front door of the main house, instructing any guests to leave a number and she’d phone them back on her return. She had gotten two bookings on one day with her last note, and didn’t leave Oak Cottages again for fear of losing business. She spoke with Gladys at least once a week regarding the running of Oak Cottages, her sister was doing better, but Gladys wouldn’t be able to return before December. Sarah still thought about Caleb everyday and not just what she had cook him or pack in his pantry basket, but trying to comprehend the feelings she was having. She was irritated with his foul mood, but at the same time empathetic for what he was going through alone in that cabin. Sarah had read one of his books back in Savannah, and she could still recall the vivid way he described the crimes. She couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to know him when he wasn’t writing.
