CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Ethan stifled a groan and turned away from the plans he’d spread out on the table. He wanted to get on with this job, hide himself away down here for a while and forget about Stacey and his wife. Forget about everything.

If only people could behave in a rational manner, he thought, life would be so much easier. He threw his pen down and walked over to where Nicci was standing, hustling her out of the door and outside the building. Taking her arm, he led her round the back, where nobody could see or hear them.

‘What is it now?’ He threw his hands up in frustration. ‘You wanted her to work here. I asked her. Then you decided that wasn’t what you wanted. Now you’ve fired her before she’s even started.’ He glared at her. ‘What the hell is going on with you?’

Nicci’s rage notched up another level. ‘I’d like to know what’s going on with you actually. Why would you side with Stacey over me? I’ve asked her to learn the ordering system but she has insisted she should start with accounts.’ She jabbed a finger at his chest. ‘You were the one who didn’t want her going near the accounts because you were worried about our financial situation being broadcast all over Skipton. Anyway, I could see she wasn’t going to listen to me.’ She gave a frustrated huff. ‘It was you who pointed out the way she treats me and I see it now. It’s never going to work with me as her boss.’ Her jaw was set, chin jutting out and he could tell she was seething. ‘She doesn’t listen, so I tell her it’s not going to work. Then she trots down to speak to you and suddenly she gets to do exactly what she wants.’ She glared at him, hands on her hips and he thought he’d never seen her quite so angry.

He’d been counting on her behaving to type, basically doing what she was told, but recently something had happened. A rebellion. Or an awakening. Or maybe a combination of the two but her timing was the worst it could possibly be. Unease swirled in his gut.

‘We have a verbal contract,’ he said as calmly as he could manage. ‘She has a voice recording of me giving her the job. And unless you want to be hauled in front of an employment tribunal, you can’t fire her before you’ve given her a chance.’ He slapped his forehead with his palm, beyond frustrated. ‘I mean it hasn’t been half an hour yet.’ He glared at her; she glared back. ‘Be reasonable,’ he pleaded.

‘A voice recording? You’re kidding me.’ Nicci looked flabbergasted, her frown deepening.

He nodded. ‘That’s what she told me and I believe her. We have no choice but to play by the rules.’ He gave a frustrated sigh. ‘Now please can I get back to what I was doing?’

He didn’t wait for an answer but stalked off, hoping she would believe his lie about a voice recording and toe the line.
