Chapter Seven

Briar

Whoever said cottontails were quiet has never slept near my brother before.

Adding in the rumblings coming from Knox, I wouldn’t be surprised if the hunters found us while we slept.

They sleep, and you’re staring at the tent ceiling. Fur brushes my mind as if she’s trying to ease me into slumber. It isn’t going to happen.

Right.

Her statement pushes me to sit up and slowly creep my way to the tent door. Thanks to Knox's giant size, there almost wasn’t enough room in here for the three of us. Maybe it was from wildly mating the man, but the space felt even more limited than it did last night. My siblings and I use this all the time when it isn’t the dead of winter, and we’re far from a hotel or even a motel. We’ve always had enough room even though Blakely and I end up cuddling because we are constantly cold.

Knox took care of that for me tonight. The moment I laid down between the two of them, he pulled me so my back was cradled against his chest. Which was fine to make it seem like I was going to fall asleep, content while still on the edge like the both of them.

Not an easy task, thanks to this new mate bond. I can sense everything about Knox and know he can do the same with me.

That’s why I waited.

Three hours have passed, and I know they are sound asleep, especially when Knox rolled away from me, leaving a chill on my back, and began to rattle like some sort of machine.

Now is my chance to make my move.

With the quiet stealth of my inner animal, I hop over Banks, who’s just as sprawled out as my mate, unzip the tent with a slow tension from each bite of the zipper until it’s enough for me to slip through, and then go for my things.

Knox thinks he’s so smart for hanging my bow and quiver on a branch just beyond my reach. It makes me snort. The pine needles, rocks, and dirt help me remain silent on bare feet. Not even when the needles turn up just right to poke me on the bottom of the foot does that stop me.

“Sonofabitch.” Growling under my breath, I locate my bag hanging from another branch and pull a clean pair of socks out before putting my boots on. I look over the tree holding my weapon and figure out the best way to climb it without waking the others.

Banks will be pissed when he wakes in the morning. Knox too, but I don’t know how he’ll react.

I go into this knowing full well how much Banks hates it when I go renegade on him, but he should be used to it by now. I’ve been this way our entire lives. It’s on him that he didn’t stay up and act as a guard or tell Knox any of what I’m likely to do.

It only takes me a couple of minutes to safely scale the tree, secure my quiver and bow on my back, and climb back down.
