The next day Lily came staggering out of the smaller room, her hair a tangled mess and her eyes swollen from lack of sleep. She wore a goofy grin and a slightly embarrassed expression. Sara hugged her and they followed the women who had come for them up the stairs to the women’s hall where they were allowed to bathe and dress in fresh clothes. They were given a place to hang the dresses they wore and were told that they would be allowed two more dresses each, that they had to make sure they were laundered and suitable every day. The women in the hall numbered fifteen, four were pregnant. All of them kept giving Sara odd appraising looks but she ignored them. She could not bear to admit that she had spent the rest of the night in tears, she had longed for Lucas to come back, to show her some tenderness. To say he cared about her the same way he had forced her to care about him.

After breakfast they went out into the orchards. As they were breeders they would have lighter duties than some, one of the women explained. They were sent to gather berries from the bushes that grew seemingly wild below the fig and apple trees. The sun was warm but not nearly as searing as it had been in the neighboring desert.

As they picked Lily asked, “Do you think the others will make it back to the city?”

“I don’t care; they sold me so their survival means nothing to me.”

“That’s harsh.” Lily said. “I mean I didn’t like it either but they were starving and we haven’t landed in a terrible situation really. Stephen is amazing.”

“Don’t fall in love with him, to them we are just child bearing machines,” Sara said darkly and her heart twisted as she wondered if she were saying that simply to warn Lily or to warn herself.

“Do you know that Lucas never took a childless woman before? The whole castle is astounded by him picking you; they had begun to think he would let his line die with him.”

That gave her pause, her fingers stilled on the low branches of the berry bush.

“That’s nice,” she finally managed. Lily gave her a searching glance, “But was it nice for you?”

“I don’t care to discuss it,” Sara said hastily but a deep blush gave her away.
