Almost every bounty hunter joined in the hunt, but Hennessey stood on the sidewalk in front of the station, debating what he should do. He knew damn well Braxton wasn't ready to be back. He'd seen the pain in the sheriff's eyes as he walked toward the entrance, putting on a brave face and acting as though he was one hundred percent better. Hennessey's first instinct was to check on Braxton to make sure he was okay. Not an hour ago he was complaining about how badly his chest hurt. Now he was at the station doing God only knew what and probably overexerting himself.

Never before had Hennessey met such a stubborn man. Braxton had too much pride, too much machismo, and far more likely would keel over before he admitted he needed to go home.

"You should stay with Braxton," Matt said. He stood by his Hummer, his arms crossed, eyeing Hennessey like he could read Hennessey's thoughts. "If Tyson decides he wants revenge for getting locked up, he might return. Braxton's gonna need someone watching his back."

Hennessey would've argued that the sheriff was surrounded by cops, but most of the deputies were out looking for Tyson. Braxton was too vulnerable right now—whether he would admit it or not—and Hennessey would be damned if he let Tyson get another shot at him.

You're getting too involved in this. You need to take a step back and seriously examine why you're acting this way. You're not a caregiver. You're a bounty hunter. He should've listened to his inner voice, but Hennessey knew he was already too invested in whatever this was. He'd started caring about Braxton. He wasn't sure when it had happened, maybe slowly, like over the course of the past ten days, but he liked the guy, found Braxton funny and handsome and loved being in his company.

"You got a good point," Hennessey said. "I'll keep an eye on things while you guys find Tyson."

He looked toward the brick building—that had a flagpole on the right side of the small patch of grass, and a small tree on the other side—and sighed as a stray breeze ruffled the leaves and skirted over his face and scalp. The sound of the leaves moving and the scent of pine trees on the air reminded him that he hadn't gone for a run in a while.

After he got Braxton home and settled in, Hennessey needed to go run in the forest behind the sheriff's house. His wolf was getting cagey, and if he didn't let him out soon, his beast would force his way out, and that was never a good thing.

And not just for a little while, either—like when he'd shifted to track Bloom's scent. His wolf needed an honest-to-goodness run, the earth under his paws, the wind whipping through his fur, and the sun shining down on him.

Hennessey looked up and down the street, checking for trouble, before he went inside and found Braxton passed out on his office floor.
