Our plane dipped down below the thick, gray fog lying over the city of London. I watched as small droplets of water raced across the cabin window next to me, blown back by the speed at which we were traveling.

Dom had fallen asleep during the nearly eleven hour flight. He was softly snoring. His head was flopped over onto my shoulder as if he was a limp rag doll. I looked down at him and watched as his chest heaved in and out. The jagged scar starting near his ear caught my attention again. I reached out the tip of a finger and traced its erratic trail gently, wondering about its story; wondering about Dom’s story in general.

Where had he been? What had he been through?

Just as my finger started to dip down under his collar, he picked his head up and leaned back against the seat.

“What are you doing?”

“I was wondering about something.”

He finally opened his eyes and turned to look at me with a smile, “What’s that?”

“You never did tell me how you got this,” I tapped the healed wound.

Dom took my hand and lowered it away. He wasn’t smiling anymore.

“Sophie,” he cleared his throat, “it isn’t something that I like to talk about.”

I think that he could see the disappointment on my face. He sighed and rubbed the back of my hand with this thumb, “Okay, okay.”

He licked his still bloody lip and softly touched his swollen, dark eye. It was a few moments before he turned to me and started to talk. His face, though battered and bruised, told me as much about the story as his words did. He still wore the emotional scars of whatever it was that he was going to tell me.

“I had never planned for this kind of life, Sophie. I never meant for things to go the direction that they did. I guess that, sometimes, our desires aren’t enough to change the direction that fate chooses for us.”

He lifted my hand and kissed it. I could see him thinking about what he was going to say; trying to find the words to express something that had haunted him for a very long time.

“My family grew up in a slum in Rio. They call them favelas. Anyway, back then things were rough. I suppose that they still are for a lot of people. I haven’t been back in a very long time.” He looked out of the window at the gray nothingness, “Me and my sisters were young when a group of brazen thugs took over the city. They went by the name of ‘Comando Vermelho’ and they were ruthless. It became common to hear about someone being killed because of a debt or a negative word. Everyone was poor and the gang was the only place they- we -could go to feed our families. It was only a few months before they had the neighborhood in an iron grip.”

The plane had begun to bounce around as it cut through the dense haze.
