Study the storyboard for the commercial. The storyboard will show what you and your fellow actors should be doing and how you all should appear in the camera at different key points of the commercial. (Taking an improv class can also help you adapt and perform in unusual situations like this, too. Chapter 6 gives helpful information about taking an improv class.)

HOW ACTORS EAT FOOD OVER AND OVER AGAIN WHILE FILMING A COMMERCIAL

If you’ve involved in a commercial where you need to drink or eat food, don’t worry. No matter how wonderful the food may be, the director knows that few actors can maintain the same level of enthusiasm for a product after they’ve already eaten it seventeen times in a row and are feeling stuffed. So if you’re involved in a commercial where you need to eat something, you’ll be supplied with the unceremoniously named “spit bucket.”

As the name implies, the spit bucket (which is hidden off-camera, of course) is used to catch the food that actors spit out after takes. After taking a mouthful of a sandwich and relishing the taste in your mouth, wait until you hear the director say, “Cut!” At this time, you may lean over and spit the entire mouthful of food into the spit bucket. Then it’s time for a fresh chunk of food and another take, with another mouthful of food destined for the spit bucket. By using the spit bucket, actors can perform several takes without getting bloated and full, neither of which would aid in the actor’s performance.
