Twenty-Nine

Through the Dark

{ Jesse }

The sound of a door closing snapped me awake.

Liam and Persephone were still sitting next to each other, wide awake, as Anastasia came over to us.

“She’s gonna make it.”

Relief spread through me, and a fresh tear slid down my cheek. Without thinking, I jumped and wrapped my arms around Anastasia. She tensed under my embrace but quickly recovered and returned it with an awkward pat on my back.

I pulled away, apologizing. “I didn’t mean—”

“No, it’s okay.” She tiredly rubbed a hand over her face. “We’re not thinking clearly.”

“She’s going to be okay?” Liam asked quietly.

“She’ll live, and that’s enough for me,” Anastasia amended.

Persephone let out a small gasp, though this time—unlike the previous outbursts—she was filled with relief.

“I don’t know much beyond that,” Anastasia continued, holding her arms out to the moving Persephone. The two enclosed each other in a close hug, and I glanced at Liam. His eyes were fixed on them.

“Will we be able to take her to the hospital?” I asked.

Anastasia pulled away from Persephone but kept her close.

“Anya,” Persephone started, “we have to, she’ll—”

“I know, Perse,” Anastasia whispered, smoothing Persephone’s hair. She turned to me and sighed. “We’re going to. But we’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”

“Why?” Liam asked.

I chuckled wryly. “In case you forgot, there’s kind of an entire organization that knows they’re missing. And Anastasia’s the one who has to take the fall.”

“Not the entire organization,” Anastasia corrected at Liam’s chastened expression. “You forgot I killed the guy who shot Nia. It’s simply a matter of them missing from after school. And it isn’t even too late for that, but you’re right. I have to go back and fix this mess.”

“What are you going to tell Higgins?” Persephone asked. I didn’t know who that was, and by the looks of Liam’s face, he didn’t, either. I assumed it wasn’t important.

“I’m not going to tell Higgins. I’m going straight to the Master’s Board.”

Whatever the reveal meant, Persephone’s mouth dropped open, and she took a step back. She looked horrified.

“Perse, they’ll believe me! Do you have any idea how long I’ve been with Ivankov? How loyal I’ve been to them for this exact purpose?”

Persephone frowned. “Yes, but you’re not one of them—”

“Ernest, Margaret, and Pamuk all trained me themselves. We were friends, and now, thanks to Lavinia, they’re dead.”

“She was protecting—” Persephone hissed.

“And I’m protecting you, Perse,” Anastasia begged. “I’m protecting all of you. So excuse me while I do everything I can to save you three and these idiots”—she jerked a thumb toward Liam and me, and I would have been offended if it weren’t true—“by risking everything to talk to the Master’s Board.”

Persephone was quiet, though I wasn’t sure how much of it was out of anger or tiredness. I was exhausted. But I wasn’t the one who had lived all of this before.

“What are you going to tell them?” Persephone asked softly after a few long moments.

Anastasia hesitated only a moment. “I’m going to tell them that as your in-team, I have the authority to authorize you for missions and organization-related activities.
