. “Don’t make me your
enemy, Pravan. You above all else I can trust. And you remember
what happened to those that thought they could double-deal me. The
good lawyer can attest to that. He thought he could play me too.” A realization. He’d wished he could have recorded the
conversation but it wouldn’t do any good. “You had him killed,
didn’t you?”
“Just do as I ask of you. It’s oh so simple.”
“And if I don’t or chose not to?”
“Come, come now. How is your daughter these days? Cello practice
going well is it?”
“You leave them out of this. Do you hear me?”
Lighthearted, he added, “I’ll be expecting a result, Pravan. I’m
going to give you three weeks, the exact same time you gave me
twenty years ago. So don’t think me ungrateful. Be a good cop.” And
then he hung up.
He poured himself another brandy and tossed it back, just as
Moira came in the door with Elise sleepily trailing behind. And she
saw him there lost in thought but said nothing until Elise went
upstairs. “Comfy?” she asked him and patted his shoulder. She took
the glass and sipped the last remnants. “Are you in a stupor?” Sighing he added, “I should have done something twenty years
ago,” he said, looking drained.
“What’s up?”
He took her hand in his. “He’s looking for it.”
She walked around to the front of the chair, cupping her mouth. “So it’s really him?”
“There’s little doubt to that. And he’s up to his old tricks again – a
solicitor this time. Seems he was having me followed.”
“Well, do the police know? Can we at least – ”
“No,” he forced. “He’s too smart for that. And with a few people in
his pocket they’ll be watching what we do. Just try to stay calm, keep
your routines. He won’t try anything. Not if he wants what he’s
looking for.”
She took a seat. “You know that’s impossible – it’s out of our
hands. There’s just no way.”
“There might be. We’ll have to be careful about this.”
She looked worried. “Who can we trust?”
He rubbed the back of his hand and thought about the question.
“There might be someone. I’ll need a little time. Just stay as we are.
Don’t go out of those boundaries, he’ll expect that.”
“We might be bugged.”
He pulled up an electronic sweeper from beside the chair. “We’re
good,” he said and poured her a brandy.

There had been no news from Clarke on the latest murder and he was feeling out of the loop and not liking it. If anything, he had to reassure himself as well as those in the squad that he was still on good form. By now, it had probably gotten around. It was an embarrassment he wouldn’t live down for some time and it would be a mark on his career. The bottom of the garden was as good a place as any for thinking. The neighbouring houses could barely see from the high wall of hedges he had planted there when they first moved in. It provided ample privacy, a must for Moira and the three girls. At one time there was
