"What are you doing here?"

"David had them call me."

"Mommy?"

The pitiful, frightened cry superseded her shock over seeing Pierce. Rushing to the side of the examination table, she looked down at her son and barely stifled a gasp. His right eye was almost swollen shut. An inch-long gash had been cut from the middle of his eyebrow to well past the outer corner. It had stopped bleeding, but the raw flesh lay open … obscenely open.

"David, baby, what happened? Oh, Lord! Are you in pain?"

"It hurts, Mommy." Blindly he groped for her, catching a fistful of her shawl.

"I know, I know it hurts, sweetheart." Frantically she looked up at Pierce. "Have they done anything for him? What about his eye?"

He shook his head. "They wouldn't let me sign the permission for treatment. He can see out of his eye. I already tested him on it."

"Thank God," she breathed as she gripped David's hand. "We're going to get you fixed up. I promise."

"Don't leave me, Mommy," he cried when she began to draw her hand from his.

"I'm not going to leave you. I'm only going to get the doctor."

Just then the nurse swished in crisply. "Mrs. Russell, if you'll please sign this form and give me the name of your insurance company and your policy number, I can give David a shot to relieve his pain."

"I don't want a shot," David screamed and began to cry.

"Hey, hey, what was that promise we made each other about being brave? Hmm?" Pierce lay a consoling hand on the boy's shoulder and bent over him.

Alicia fumbled in her handbag for her wallet, where she kept her insurance cards. When the forms had been properly filled out, the nurse prepared a syringe with a mild sedative. "It won't hurt so bad in his hip."

Alicia and Pierce, working together, got David's belt unbuckled, turned him over, and lowered his jeans. He was crying copiously. Alicia's heart was wrenching.

"Now we'll let that take effect while we wait for Dr. Benedict," the nurse said.

"What do you mean wait?" Alicia demanded heatedly. "I want my son seen to immediately. What's wrong with you people?"

"Alicia, I took the liberty of calling Frank Benedict," Pierce said calmly. "He's a plastic surgeon, a friend of mine. I thought you might want a plastic surgeon to suture David since the cut is in such a visible place on his face."

"Oh," she said in a small voice. "Of course. I probably would have done that myself. Thank you, Pierce."

The nurse looked at her smugly as she went out the door. No doubt she had assessed Alicia as an unfit mother who couldn't be found when her son was injured. She had assumed Pierce was her lover.

Wasn't he?

The staff doctor, looking alarmingly young and breezy, bustled through the door. He was wearing jeans and jogging shoes with his laboratory coat. "Hi. Which one of you is David? No, let me guess. You," he said, pointing to the boy, "the one with the busted eye.
