Stevie

Of course, Micah would call tonight. After the fucked up day I’ve had, while I’m feeling spent in every way imaginable. The only good thing is, I’m numb. Completely.

Details from my encounter at Dusty’s have been swimming through my head the entire bus ride home. He and Scar seemed like nice enough people, but what if I’m wrong? What if it was an act and they know more than they’re letting on? It all has to mean something, but Mel didn’t leave me a single clue. Now, I may as well be wandering through the dark without a flashlight.

I climb out of the car and stand on the sidewalk, phone in hand as the driver pulls off. I’ve been on the fence about texting my mother all night, but I’m desperate. What if she has answers? What if she knows something I don’t that could help me sort through the pieces? I’ve made it a point to avoid her this past week, but maybe it’s time to put an end to the silence.

For Mel.

Before I lose the nerve, I shoot her a message.

Stevie: Hey. I need to ask a question and please be honest.

I add the last part because, since losing Mel, Mom tiptoes around my feelings sometimes. But if she knows something, even if she thinks I can’t handle it, I need her to tell me.

Mom: Of course, but where have you been? I’ve been calling since you stormed off at Rob’s.

Stevie: I need to know why Mel might’ve taken a trip out to Cypress Pointe?

Here’s hoping she answers despite me ignoring her question. Right now, our issues are secondary. The focus should be on Mel.

While I wait for a reply that might not even come, I stare up the side of the manor, noting that most of the windows are dark. All except the lower level. I dread going inside, dread the noise and whatever task Micah has awaiting me, but there’s no avoiding it or him.

My phone sounds off and my eyes flash down toward the screen.

Mom: What? When?

Stevie: Not sure exactly, but I need to know why she might’ve gone. Do you have any idea what she could’ve been looking for?

Mom: No, she never mentioned it. What’s happening? Where’d you hear about this? You need to talk to me, Stevie.

I sigh and accept that I’ve just run headfirst into yet another brick wall. Like always. Frustrated, I shove the phone back in my pocket without responding. Doesn’t seem to be a point anyway.

I ascend the front steps of The Den and turn the knob. It’s unlocked like Micah said it would be, so I let myself in. It seems like no matter the time of day or night, this place is always lively, buzzing with laughter and masculine energy.

On cue, loud cheering erupts from the game room as I move through the hallway undetected. Walking past the game room, I spot Enzo among the crowd, sipping a beer. He laughs at something that’s said just out of earshot, but then his eyes catch mine.
