Chapter 8

“So… Max. He’s a bit rough around the edges.” Kathy raised her eyebrows and looked up at Dayton from the gigantic pot of tomato soup she was stirring.

Dayton blinked, startled into freezing over his lunch, with the sandwich halfway to his mouth. Oh, God. How did she know about him and Max? It wasn’t like they advertised their relationship. Had Max told her? He must have.

“You think?” he asked in the end.

Kathy’s eyes went wider, which stressed the wrinkles on her forehead. “You don’t think? Judging by your past boyfriends I wouldn’t exactly assume he’d be your type.”

Dayton squirmed in the seat, feeling like a bug caught under a cup. “Well... maybe? I don’t know. He’s a nice person. I thought you liked him, too,” he said, suddenly afraid of the answer he might get. What if Max had been unpleasant to Kathy?

“No, I do. He swears like a sailor, so that’s just right up my street in the kitchen, but I wouldn’t really let him date my daughter, if you know what I mean.” Kathy’s daughter wasn’t even eight yet, but Dayton was pretty sure that wasn’t the point. And with Kathy being a good twenty years older than him, she sometimes acted as if she was his mom.

He stirred, starting to feel uneasy about such comments about Max, and not even because they could be a judgment of his own choices. He just thought Max deserved more credit that everyone gave him. “Why?”

Kathy stopped stirring the pot with a deep sigh. “He seems a bit like the hit ‘em and quit ‘em kinda guy. And you’re a ball of anxiety already. I guess I don’t want to see you hurt once— if he bails at some point.”

Dayton stuffed his face with the sandwich, but his mind was already doing a frantic analysis of Max and his behavior. So far, Max had made an effort to accommodate Dayton’s needs. He didn’t try to belittle his neurotic anxieties and he’d urged Dayton to get tested for STDs on the day after they did it bareback for the first time. And they were both healthy, even though just having to go through the process had made Dayton lose sleep the night before they received the results.

Max deserved a chance. He might be a bit brash, but he was a good guy. “I don’t know. He is very caring and nice when he is with me.”

Kathy snorted and started cutting carrots. “He does talk about you like you’re God’s gift to men.”

Dayton almost dropped the sandwich onto the plate. “H-he does?”

Kathy pointed at him with a carrot. “See. And this is exactly what I mean. You’ll get all excited, and what if he changes his mind later? At least he won’t leave you with a kid like my good for nothing ex-husband did. He used to promise me the moon and the stars, and then left with a trucker. I mean, a woman, who drives a truck. A trucker woman for
