Chapter Four

They ate at a small restaurant near Oliver and Kieran’s house where the food was delicious, the service excellent, and the atmosphere friendly. As always when they were together, they talked and laughed and enjoyed themselves greatly.

“You’ve heard all about my soccer experience and how I broke my leg, but you’ve never said how yours happened. Car accident?” asked Oliver, unconsciously mimicking Rose’s original comment to him just a few days ago.

“Um. No.” Yet again, Rose’s face turned fiery red, and she looked down at the tablecloth before pushing her glasses up her nose and sighing. “This is really embarrassing. I was cleaning my kitchen floor,” she muttered.

“What, you slipped because the floor was wet?” said Kieran sympathetically. “That could happen to anyone.”

“Um. No. I pushed the refrigerator out from the wall to clean behind it, and it overbalanced and landed on my leg.”

“The refrigerator landed on your leg? Shit! You’re lucky you only broke your femur. You could have smashed half the bones in your body,” gasped Oliver.

“Yeah, well, I tore a few ligaments and stuff as well, but the hard part was getting the damn thing off my leg so I could phone the paramedics.”

“How did you?” asked Kieran, entranced at this whole new side of herself Rose was revealing to them.

“The mop was right beside me because I had planned to clean the floor behind the refrigerator with it, so I used it as a lever and was able to lift the refrigerator and pull my leg out. Hurt like hell, though,” she admitted.

“I bet it did.” And both men sympathetically squeezed her hands, then deftly turned the conversation to their choices for dessert.
