XXV

It hadn’t been an easy decision.

While she was driving toward the Forensics Squad offices, listening to her own heart pounding violently in her ears, Alex tried to figure out the reasons she had wanted to see Rosaria Martone, after rejecting her voice and presence for more than a month.

A lot of things had happened, during that month. Pain. Jealousy. Determination. And courage, most of all: a gold nugget found at the bottom of the mine, when she was no longer even hoping to find one.

Courage was a conquest that no one would ever take away from her.

She had realized it yesterday evening, as she lay naked on the bed, in her new apartment. She had always yearned to sleep without any clothes on, disregarding restrictions and taboos at least at night, but for her mother, and especially for her father, who was always the last one to go to bed, but only after reviewing every room in the apartment, such a thing would have been inconceivable. And that was precisely the reason that sleeping nude was the first thing she had done when she went to live on her own.

Staring at the ceiling and listening to the noises rising up from the road below, she had decided that the new Alex, the one that she was discovering day by day, was no longer afraid. The new Alex took things on, whether they turned out to be nice or awful, and she supported their burden. The new Alex refused to allow other people’s intentions and behaviors to influence what she thought and desired.

Rosaria had cheated on her, and she’d suffered enormously as a result, but only a coward would refuse to look her in the eyes. She needed to meet her, face to face. She needed to prove to her that she, Alex, was capable of making her own decisions, without relying on anyone else’s support.

She parked and took a deep breath, trying to regain energy and equilibrium. But it didn’t work.

So she tried to focus on her work. She had a job to do, and the others were counting on her. She needed to help them, now that she felt like an active and operative member of a team, for the first time in her life.

And then there was the whole question of that young woman, the model.

There was something about Smeraglia that baffled her. She was beautiful, stunningly beautiful, but the confidence and the cynicism that she’d slapped like a weapon in her and Aragona’s faces had left her with more than one question. She’d talked about her with her partner, in the car, while driving back to the police station. Like everyone else, Alex didn’t have a particularly high opinion of Marco, who was an uncommon concentration of prejudices and shallow opinions, but she had to admit that it was precisely his absolute lack of intellectual complexity that allowed him, at times, to identify easy solutions where nobody else could make head or tail of things.

To her surprise, Aragona had listened to her without interrupting.
