The creak of the turret ladder and a knock on my bedroom door drag me from a fog of misery. How much time has passed? Hours?

“Isaiah?”

I pull my sleeping bag over my head. Zech can’t help me. Not this time.

I hear the door slide back; feel him perch in the entrance of my berth. The light clicks on, seeping in on me.

“The coroners have finished up and taken themselves off, along with what’s left of those poor folks. Cops are still taking pictures. Fence guys have got all the major wires up and clipped some temporary netting over it—they say it’s a good point at which to stop for the night. Mebbe, or mebbe they just figured out there’s a pool in the central complex, but if they say so. Fence is back up, anyway. So, we’re off-duty until tomorrow, now.”

A twinge of guilt stirs—I’ve left Zech up there for hours, without any break to use the head or snack or just relax for a moment. I guess he just peed out the window, but still. If I open my mouth, I’m afraid I’ll start crying again, and I’m not a cry baby, so...so I keep it shut.

Silence for a while. Then he gives my leg a squeeze. “Isaiah? I...read the messages.”

Yeah, well, I left them up on the screen, so that’s no surprise. Figured he had or he’d’ve been in here by now, checking I wasn’t dying or something.

“I’m really sorry, cub. That woman’s a piece of work, all right. I’d like to punch her lights out, only I guess that would break rule three.”

I still can’t speak.

Zech sighs. “Look, you tried. Some folks just can’t be reasoned with and that’s a fact.” He hesitates. “And...maybe it’s for the best. I mean, what we going to do with a baby, huh?”

I sit up and kick him clean out of my berth. “That’s my child, Zech!” I yell after him. “Your niece or nephew’s got a death sentence and that’s for the best? You sound like her!” I scramble along and try to pull the door shut, but he pops up again before I can.

“Yeah, okay, sorry, Isaiah.” His face blazes hotly. “That wasn’t a nice thing to say. Of course it’s bad. It’s really bad. I’m sorry. But you did everything you could, okay?” He reaches for my battered hand, trying to get a better look, but I yank it away. He draws back again. “Okay, look, why don’t you come check out that pool; take your mind off it for a bit?”

“No.”

“Do you mind if I go?”

“Yes, fine, go. Have fun. Bye.” I push him out of the way of the door and slide it shut.

“Isaiah...”

“Just go away. I’m fine.”

Zech sighs and clatters around in the living area for a while. Eventually, he taps on the door again. “Okay, I’m heading over to the pool; sure you don’t want to come?”

I ignore him.

“I left you a coffee on the table. I’ll see you in a bit.”

I hear the ’Vi door hiss open—then closed.
