Chapter Fifteen
Stasia
My momâs text was brief, but I suppose she wanted to make sure no one knew where I was going.
Mom: Ana, itâs Mom. I have a burner. Meet Dad and me where I used to work.
Niko just came back, and I donât want to see him. I need to get out of the house without him knowing. Thereâs no way he would take me, and thereâs absolutely no chance in hell heâd let me go alone. I know he only wants his family to guard me. He made that plenty clear.
âHi. I asked Niko, who asked Maksim, if I can go for a walk. They both said yes as long as I have two guards.â
Iâm lying to the guards standing in the driveway. Iâm sure Niko will go berserk when he finds out what Iâm about to do. I honestly feel bad for what might happen to them. I donât think Niko will go as far as taking them to whatever place they use, but heâs going to be pissed. I figure if I say that Niko and Maksim want me to have two guards, thatâs more plausible, since Iâm sure theyâve made it clear to all the guards that only they or their brothers and cousins can guard me.
âI should check, Ms. Antonov.â
âMaksim and his brothers just went into a meeting. They donât want to be disturbed. It doesnât have to be a long walk. Iâm just bored, and itâs such a nice day.â
Itâs fucking humid as hell, and the hair is already sticking to my neck. But I need out. The men look at each other, and two step forward. Once weâre on the sidewalk, they keep a discreet distance, but theyâre only a few steps behind. I try not to rush, but I want to get to the subway station now. It only takes a few more minutes. I canât look back to see how close they are, so Iâm assuming I can make it. I have my subway card in hand. When I get even with the steps down to the platforms, I veer right, and bolt down them.
ââScuse me.âScuse me.â
Iâm lucky Iâm so fucking thin. Usually, I hate it. I love to run, but I canât keep any weight on. I feel like a âtween standing next to most of my friends. But right now, itâs saving my ass. I can squeeze between people. As I turn sideways to get around a heavy-set man, I can see my guards barreling down the stairs. Theyâre large enough to make people want to move. But thereâs not enough room for them to pass easily. I blow through the turnstile as I pass my subway card over the reader. When I get to the platform, the announcer is warning the doors are about to close. I glance up and see itâs the F train. Itâs the one I want. Iâd be fucked if it were the E. I barely make it onto the car before the doors trap me.
