“Jesus Christ!” I shout.

Someone throws a pillow at me. Maybe it was the white guy with bad acne. Parker, I think? I’ve said “Jesus Christ” as my answer every round. I figure that eventually I’ll be right.

The others on our team shout out names like Eve and Queen of Sheba.

“Time’s up!” Matt says.

“It was Absalom!” Gwen points the stylus at the stick figure on the iPad. The drawing looks like a woman floating in a tree. “See the long flowing hair? Caught in the tree?”

“Then you should have drawn the three darts in his heart,” Parker says. “I thought it was Eve and the Tree of Life.”

“Then the tree would have had apples!” Gwen says, her hands on her hips. Damn, that girl doesn’t like to lose. But everyone laughs, including Gwen. And there’s Matty, his head back, howling with laughter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him laugh before.

“We won! We won!” a short white girl chants as she jumps up and down. She gives Matt and the other people on her team a high five.

“I demand a rematch!” Gwen says.

“Okay, but let’s take a break first,” the Asian guy with big ears says. Owen? There are about eight people in the Michigan crew, and I only remember the names of a couple of them.

Raveena, who was on my team, nudges my shoulder. “Can we talk? In private?” she whispers.

I give her my best shit-eating grin. I lean in and whisper back, “Did I hear you right? You want to talk privately? To me?”

The look she gives me would freeze the sun. She doesn’t say anything but walks out of the hotel room as though she expects me to follow her.

Of course I do.
