Chapter Nine

It’s raining again tonight, and my mom is in the next town at some sort of dinner function with Carson. I tried to occupy my time with reading and talking with Cat, but that quickly lost its appeal when I heard Luca and River slam through the front doors, laughing like old times.

I could have walked in and tried to join them, but with the way things left off with River, I took the cowards way out and fled via the garage door before they could see or hear me. Jax went into town to visit one of his old buddies at the fisherman's pub, so I have the whole evening to kill. I find myself here at Landy’s, the only place I can honestly say is starting to feel like a second home. She’s out of town until sometime tomorrow—holed up at a hospital for another procedure. It seems she’s gone more often these days, always doing some new round of chemo or experimental procedures... but I can see her waning every single day. It kills me to see such a vibrant woman fade.

She gave me the keys to the studio and permission to use it whenever I want. So I find myself here again, dancing in the back studio room to a slower song with a thumping bass that makes my heart beat in sync with my steps. It’s hot in this room, causing tiny beads of sweat to erupt on my back and shoulders. My cropped back t-shirt is sticking to my body and my bare feet slap the wooden floor every time I land gracefully on the balls of my feet.

I’m interrupted by a heavy thud on the glass window that faces Mainstreet. Snapping my head up, I squint my eyes through the dark room, just enough to make out the figure on the other side of the glass. Jax stands there with his black hood pulled up, grinning at me as the rain pours around him. He nods his head, gesturing for me to let him in. I let out a long breath and rush to the emergency exit, pushing it open just enough for him to slip inside before I slam it shut and click the lock.

“What are you doing here?” I ask as I rush to the curtains and draw them closed. We don’t need any peeping toms thinking we’re some brat kids up to no good in here. Without the view of the window, the room looks a lot smaller.

Casting his hood off, he shakes his head of long auburn hair back and forth, letting icy droplets spray me in the face. He grins. “Just getting back from the bar, Jed had to head out early.” Hands on his hips, he looks around the room. “So this is the famous Landy’s I’ve heard so much about—” he whistles low under his breath.

“Nice right?” I make my way over to my phone, turning down the music just as a faster song begins to play.
