Dinner with Aunt Hyacinth was an uncomfortable affair. I brooded over my food, but it was all Zak’s fault. Damn him for being such a good pretender. He kept up the conversation with Aunt Hyacinth, giving me the headspace to calm down from our explosive incident in his bedroom.
I touched the area above my eye, where he had punched me. It still hurt, and a bruise had formed. I’d seen Zak in action more times than I could count. He might not be as big as I was, but he could hold his own in a fight. He was the type of guy, however, who would attack only because he was threatened or in defending someone. He didn’t go around making trouble, but he could be trouble if someone went looking for it.
Boy, had I been looking for it with all my accusations.
Instead of touching me the way he had done earlier, he completely ignored me. His body language couldn’t be more off-putting. I’d expected Aunt Hyacinth to call us out then, but other than raising an eyebrow when she saw me, she said nothing. Every now and again, she would give me the stare, though. One that said I was in trouble. Meanwhile Zak got all the smiles and polite conversation.
To make matters worse, my phone buzzed while we were eating.
“You know not to bring your phone to the dinner table, Booker,” Aunt Hyacinth chastised me. “Haven’t you done enough damage this evening already?”
I frowned at her, but the incoming call was from Grimm, and I couldn’t ignore it because she believed whatever lies Zak was feeding her. They had been together in the kitchen while I’d set the table. What could they have possibly talked about while they were alone?
“It’s urgent, ma’am,” I replied, getting to my feet. “It’s my boss. I have to take it.”
“Why on earth would the bank be calling you at this hour of the evening?”
I didn’t bother to respond but excused myself and answered the call. I left the kitchen and made a beeline for the front door. “Hey, what’s up? You’ve no idea how much I needed this call.”
I walked out of the house, wishing I hadn’t left my smokes behind. Aunt Hyacinth hated the habit, so I tried to act as if I had quit for her sake. Just two more days and then she would be out of here.
“Not going so good, is it?” he asked. “I thought Zak was to take your place here, but I haven’t seen him.”
“There was a change of plan, but I’ll explain when I see you. Did you want something?”
“Yeah, I could use my enforcer, right now. Or is now a bad time? I can handle it myself if you’re busy with your grandaunt. Shoot. I probably shouldn’t have called.”
“Trust me, Grimm, I needed you to call. Where should I meet you?”
“Double M,” he replied.
“That kind of job?”
“Yeah. We got the guys who stripped our carrier of his supplies. We need to know if they’re just stupid or working for someone else.
