The phone continued to ring as she crossed through the city, back to her house, and when she finally parked, she reached for it for the first time since calling in at work.
There were five missed calls from work, but when she called back, Edgar answered, sounding flustered.
“Oh… please tell me you’ve made a miraculous recovery!” he begged. “I need you in here.”
“You called me to beg me to come into work?” she asked without veiling her disgust. “Ten days, Edgar. Ten straight days I’ve been working and you’ve finally killed me. I am the dead horse. You cannot beat me any more.”
“Wait, what?” Edgar sounded confused. “I didn’t call you.”
“Oh.” Her brow furrowed. “I have missed calls.”
“Vanessa maybe,” he offered. “But she’s swamped at the bar right now. I’ll get her to call you later.”
“All right. Have fun.”
“You’re not even sick, are you?”
“Bye, Ed.”
A wry smile on her face, Kayla slipped from the driver’s seat and hurried up the steps to her apartment.
“Kay?” Cora called when she entered. “Is that you?”
“Who else were you expecting?” Kayla replied, turning the corner into the kitchen where she froze.
Roman Alexander was sitting at the kitchen table.
“W-what are you doing here?” she gasped, looking at her roommate with worry. “H-how did you know where I lived?”
“The shoe’s kind of on the other foot here, isn’t it?” he remarked dryly but Kayla didn’t smile, Jeffery’s words still echoing in her head.
“You could have mentioned that you were friends with Roman Alexander,” Cora laughed. “I almost had a stroke when I saw him standing there.”
“Seriously, what are you doing here?” The tension in her voice caused both Cora and Roman to stop smiling.
“I wanted to see you,” he said, apparently unabashed by the confession. In spite of her worry, Kayla felt her cheeks growing hot. How many times had she hoped to hear his voice on the other end of the phone?
But that was before I knew what he was. My enemy.
“Maybe I should leave you two alone,” Cora suggested.
“No!” Kayla cried out.
I can’t be alone with him. Jeffery warned me about this.
Roman rose stiffly as Cora’s eyes darted between the two of them, trying to gauge the situation.
“Obviously, I made a mistake coming here,” he muttered, his eyes shadowing. “I heard you were sick and I told your co-worker to tell you I was coming.”
“Oh!” Kayla breathed, suddenly remembering Vanessa’s words earlier.
“There’s a hot, hot, HOT hunk of man meat here waiting for you.”
It was Roman. That’s why she called me so many times afterward.
Confusion overwhelmed her. Clearly, he wasn’t there to harm her if he had told Vanessa he was coming.
“No, it’s okay,” Kayla said quickly, shaking her head as she tried to make sense of what he was doing there. “It’s fine. You can stay.”
“You don’t look sure,” Roman said, his chiseled jaw clenching slightly.
“I’m sure,” she replied abruptly and gave Cora an apologetic look. “I’m just exhausted. Sorry.”
Cora eyed her.
“I’m supposed to have class, but I can stay—”
“You never skip class,” Kayla told her firmly.
