I woke with a start when Lucille chugged to life, sitting upright, claws out, ready to defend myself. When I saw it was Honor, a swell of emotion hit me hard, the need to be close to him overwhelming. I scrambled across the van and seized him from the driver’s seat, pulling him tight against me. Even with his scent in my nose, his body pressed against me, it didn’t feel like enough.

“Ziggy.” Honor put his arms around me and embraced me briefly before pulling back to take my face in his hands. “Are you okay? You’re not hurt?”

Tears threatened as I shook my head. “Are you? I…you…”

“I know.” His voice sounded tight. “That’s not going to happen again.”

I wanted to ask him what had happened, and how he could be sure that he was better now, but the words wouldn’t come. No matter how hard I struggled to get them out, I choked on them.

Honor pressed a light kiss to my lips and ran his fingers through my mane. “Jacobs. He tampered with one of my rings. Used the results of Parker’s experiments to develop a mind control device. I’m sorry, Ziggy. I wasn’t myself. But that’s over now. We got rid of the rings. I never, ever meant to hurt you.”

“I know,” I managed. “You didn’t. I’m not hurt.”

“But you could have been. I could have…” He broke off, throat bobbing as he swallowed the words he couldn’t say. Honor rested his forehead against mine and took a deep breath, closing his eye. “Forgive me?”

My forgiveness wasn’t really what he needed. Honor needed to forgive himself.

I gripped the back of his head. “Honor, there’s nothing to forgive.”

He pulled out of my grasp and stared out the window, his eye glassy. “I said I would protect you, and I didn’t.” He swallowed and his stare grew cold. “This is why I work alone, dammit! How am I supposed to protect anyone? That’s not what I do. You only have to look at my track record to see it. Who have I ever saved, huh? I couldn’t save Kit and Jesse. I couldn’t save Axel. And now—”

“Stop it,” I barked and grabbed him by the shoulders.

He shoved me away. “Leave me alone!”

“No!” I insisted and grabbed him again, this time holding him in place with more strength.

Honor flashed his teeth at me. “Let me go, Ziggy!”

“Never.”

Rage flared in his eye, and he tried to shove me away again, but I held on tight. “I don’t need you!” he growled. “I don’t need anybody! I never did. All you do is slow me down and hold me back. All of you!”

The words stung, but as bad as they hurt, I knew deep down it could never compare to the pain that had been festering inside him since he’d lost Kit and Jesse. He might fight and insist that he was better off alone, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Honor needed someone to love him when he forgot how to love himself.
