Chapter Eight

Chad mixed together the ingredients for a batch of pancakes and started the coffee pot. Everything in his life seemed right: Katie had been so responsive and submissive in the tub last night. No matter what she’d said, he knew she could be, and was, everything he needed. For now he’d give her some space. Let her sleep for as long as she needed to, or until breakfast was ready.

Somehow he had to separate everything and keep his mind on bringing Kaden down. Painful memories flooded his thoughts, and he tried to push them away. It felt to him like a movie playing, with no way to switch it off. Just four years ago he’d been happy and in love with April. Everything was going perfectly.

Then, two months before the wedding she’d called him over, saying they needed to talk, and that she wanted to postpone. Her brother needed her help and she was leaving that night to go to him. April had a heart of gold and would have been there for anyone, for any reason. Chad had told her not to go, that something wasn’t right, but she’d decided not to listen to him.

Now she was dead. She had gone to help that bastard escape the cops and had been killed. The cops had closed in on her brother; gunfire had been exchanged. April had been caught in the middle, taking a bullet for her brother, a guy who couldn’t care less about another person’s life. If only she’d listened to him they could have been married, living happily, perhaps even with kids. Chad punched the cabinet door. The fucker Kaden had messed with his life. He’d make him pay. He’d jumped on this job offer when Alex and Kevin had sought him out four years ago. He hadn’t expected to fall for Katie.

Chad now knew, after Katie shared her story of the night she’d left, that it had been the same night Kaden had hurt April. That night, Kaden had killed one person, and had almost killed another. This time he wouldn’t get away.

Flipping the last of the pancakes, Chad piled them onto a platter along with sausage links. He placed the platter on a tray, along with two coffee cups, cream and sugar. What he needed to do was to get his mind off his ex-fiancée for once. Her death had haunted him for the last four years. No way would he allow anything to happen to Katie. She wouldn’t be out of his sight, and he didn’t care if she liked it or not.

Last night, when the screams had come from Katie’s apartment, his heart had stopped. All Chad knew was that he had to get to her, and he couldn’t lose her. It had worried him the rest of the night. He wasn’t sure, but something in his gut told him to hold tight to her.

In just a few weeks, Katie had become even more special to him. Holding her sleepy body last night had felt so right.
