Who was she?

When he first saw her, Patrick knew that she was not a regular. And maybe she did look as if she was trying too hard. Even as he had yet to take her for an amateur, he’d be damned if he let Walter Ross put his hands on her. The man was a freak; his idea of climax was to bloody their lips and noses until they had no choice but to seek him and only him out again if they were going to earn their tips, and they were terrified that if they gave themselves to any other client, Walter’s wrath would prove harsh and fatal. He recalled trying to tell one of the tiny blondes, the one that called herself Iris, that he could show her a better time if she just went with him. Iris shook her head furiously, and her shoulders sagged as she took Walter Ross’ hand and vanished into one of the back rooms. Next night, she was gone. And the night after and the night after. Patrick asked Mistress Serena what had happened. The woman said that the girl was off for greener pastures. He only saw her one other time. Iris had a flat paid in full, and her bruises were nearly healed. But she walked with a limp, something that she would never shake.

And when he saw Abigail, his first thought was to save her from that.

She started to stir in his arms, and Patrick held her tighter in an effort to ease her from any bad dreams. He had been furious when he learned what she was, a liar who had no right to be at the club in the first place. But she had submitted like a pro, and now he only wanted to keep her close. Confined if he could. No. He didn’t really mean that. Bird like her should have the chance to stretch her wings at every chance.

“I… I fell asleep,” Abigail said.

Her voice was full of apologies, and he was quick to calm her fears by placing a kiss to her lips.

“I get that,” he said. “Quite a show. I’m proud of you.”

Abigail lowered her eyes and started to pull away from him, but Patrick held her fast and would not let her leave his embrace.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked, his voice thick and husky. As his gaze settled on the full curve of her lips, he could feel her trembling. With any other girl, every other girl, there was something about a seductive quiver that made him hard as a rock. Abigail was no exception, and yet the idea of scaring her off was something that he could not accept.

“Mr. Dorson,” she started. “I---”

“Patrick,” he said, cutting her off, correcting her. He wanted her to use his name, and he longed to hear it coming through her parted lips in exhilarated screams when he took her again. When he finally deemed her ready for the crack of the whip.
