Chapter Eight

Holy Moses. Eric’s eyes shot wide as they entered into a room that glittered floor to ceiling with shined gems in black rock. Every hue of a vast rainbow of gemstones glittered under the light cast from white torches that lined the walkway to a long stone table where gray men in charcoal-gray robes sat in high-backed chairs.

The center gray man waved them closer. “Come, come, this is a joyous summons, not an occasion for solemnity.”

Eric relaxed significantly at his jovial tone. He hadn’t met many gray men with much of an outward, rambunctious personality. Of course, it could be that Adlor and his siblings shared a somewhat reserved persona considering they were the only ones he’d met.

The gray man smiled down at them as Adlor tugged him just past his siblings to stand on the white gem the size of a Volkswagen before the table.

“I am Councilman Maison, the director of unions for the hive,” he said, smiling at Eric.

“Nice to meet you,” Eric said. “I’m Eric.”

“It is wonderful to meet one who is to become one of us.” Maison picked up an actual paper scroll and scanned the document. It only struck Eric as strange because he hadn’t seen paper used anywhere else since joining the aliens. “It has come to our attention that you want to join with the hive’s Adlor and therefore join his nest. Is that correct?”

Eric swallowed, shifting from foot to foot. “Y–yes.” Man, becoming the boyfriend of a gray man is freaking insane.

“It’s highly unusual for a gray man to take an outsider as his own, but we are aware that humans are rare themselves. You will make a gem for the hive. You know that whatever secrets you learn from the hive, even your beloved’s name, are forbidden to share with outsiders?”

“I understand.” It would be hard, but he could do it. He tilted his head to the side. He wondered where the council had learned English if those lessons were rare this far out in the universe.

“Good.”

Wait, he’s not speaking English. Eric frowned. He was speaking some other language. He glanced at Adlor and understanding dawned. You did not implant a language into my head without telling me! His fists curled at his sides. It wasn’t like he could confront him right this second, but he definitely would once they got out of here.

“There are three tests that we require in order to be considered officially joined. Tomorrow there will be a maze you must complete with Adlor’s help. He will instruct you from above, and it will be a test of how well you work together. If you complete it within the four-hour time period, we consider it a success. The other two tests are a test of your sexual compatibility and another for your devotion. Depending on how you do on the first test, we will cater the next two accordingly.”

Eric nodded, though his heart was pounding like a kettle drum. “Okay. I think I can do that.”

“Be of ease.
