Chapter 27

Auryn took me into A’ka’s roost through the side entrance. “He’s on the first floor,” Auryn said quietly as we moved through the lower hospital levels.

“Should I be prepared for anything?” I whispered.

“No, his lungs are stable now.”

“He was coughing up blood.”

“I know.”

“How worried should I be about it?”

Auryn shook his head. “No more concerned than you already were. You can talk to him in relative private. Limit it to about twenty minutes.”

The main clinic seemed busy, with A’ka in the center of the polished room directing a flow of patients and attendants. Without a word she shoved some tablets at Auryn, who accepted them and summoned a little knot of assistants. A’ka pointed to my immediate left.

I turned: Keon on the farthest bed, staring at the ceiling.

His expression burned, and he tried to sit up. I pushed him back down. “Don’t cause another scene, Keon.”

“What are you doing here?” he demanded, voice hoarse.

“We’re settling this,” I said, heart in my throat, and something inside me trembled. I shoved it away and faced my errant consort. “No more bullshit, Keon. Tell me why you left. The only way I’m going to think less of you is if you just refuse to talk. I can deal with anything at this point.”

“Are you sure about that?” he asked, shaking off my hand enough to sit up.

“Alien space dragons living under the ocean who shepherded my species’ technology so they could maintain control of it and they might not be above blasting my species back into the dark ages and hello, I’m some sort of weird destined to be here because the cosmos says so? And let’s not forget that my human lifespan is going to shorten the lives of at least two critically important drakes, my kids have about a ten percent chance of surviving to first molt, and will never know their grandparents. Auryn lost scales, and rumors abound Akoni tried to murder me—what do you have?”

I waited for him to speak. When he didn’t, I said, “I mean, you and I are the immaculate consort conception. I don’t think we ever even held hands, and the snuggliest we ever got was when I was wrestling you on K’Dol’s platform because you were out of your mind for a few seconds. Confession: I enjoyed it.”

“Do you enjoy being in Akoni’s coils?”

I ignored the disgust dripping off his voice. “Yes, I enjoyed that. Don’t know why you got so bent about it.”

“Because he’s a snake, and you were falling for it. You’re still falling for it.”

“The cosmic joke’s on him, isn’t it. Tell me why you don’t want to try to make it work.”

Keon stared at me blankly. “Why do you? Why is your first choice to try to have all three of us?”

“Because I’ve already been Bereft once. No thanks, would like to avoid if possible. Can’t recommend it. What’s your reason?”

He rested his forearms on his knees. “I don’t have a single reason.”

“I’m listening.”

“I’m not going to argue with you.
