Chapter Six

Tom

“There’s something I need to tell you when we get up to my room,” I finally said, taking her hand in mine as I helped her out of my car back at the hotel.

She stood up and froze. “Why do I have a bad feeling all of a sudden?” she asked.

“Will you please just give me time to explain everything before you leave?”

“What do you mean?”

I held her hand even tighter to prevent her from pulling away, and to keep her walking toward the hotel stairs.

“It’s complicated and I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.”

“You’re scaring me, Tom.”

“I’m terrified of your reaction, but I want to be honest with you. I really hope that you won't leave after I tell you.”

I unlocked and opened the door for her, watching her hesitate before stepping inside.

Turning on the lights that illuminated her mother's file, I started into the freefall.

“I’m an investigator for the government, not a private investigator.”

“The fact that you lied to me earlier doesn’t bode well,” she said as she looked at all the manila files, recording devices, and other accessories spread out on the hotel desk before she turned back around to face me.

“Elizabeth, I know what you are and I don’t care.”

She jerked away from me and covered her mouth. All the color drained from her face.

“What do you mean?” she asked softly, her voice trembling.

“You know what I mean. I know your mother was a witch, that you’re one, and that your brother is a warlock.”

“Oh God,” she whispered as she sat down on the edge of the bed. “How? How do you know?” Her eyes had started to shimmer, and it killed me to have to confess what I'd kept from her. Before I answered she got up and walked over to pick up the manila file. The tears finally overflowed down her cheeks when she opened it and saw the picture of her mother.

I kept standing where I was in front of the door, likely because I wanted to grab her if she tried to make a run for it. Rubbing the back of my neck I tried to figure out the best way to explain this.

“I’m a D.R.A. agent.”

“No. Please tell me this is a horrible sick joke,” she said as she shook her head in denial, and her tears fell even harder. “Why do you have this? Why are you here?” she asked, holding up the picture.

“For you and your brother. The agency knows your mother was a witch because of her blood loss from the accident. But you have to believe me when I tell you that I’m not going to let the agency know I found you or your names or anything about the two of you. I swear I would never do that to you.”

She bolted for the door.

“Elizabeth, please wait,” I said, blocking her path. “You and your brother’s lives are in serious danger. You should’ve left town. There’s another agent here, and if I don’t thrown him off track, he will find you.
