MICKEY RETURNED to the room, and he and Chris finished their sandwiches.

“Okay, Mickey, what did Scooter tell you in the hallway?”

“He wanted to know if I was planning on sleeping in your room tonight, and I told him yes. Then he said he’d leave instructions for sedation in case you had a relapse of the hysteria.”

“I won’t.”

“Nevertheless, the option is there, if it’s needed.”

Mickey and Chris spent a quiet evening talking and watching television until Chris said, “I’m worn out and beginning to get uncomfortable, so I’m going to ask them to bring me a pain pill and call it a night.”

“I think I’ll do the same thing, minus the pain meds,” Mickey said.

He stood, kissed Chris thoroughly, and settled back in his chair. He went to sleep quickly, but was awakened later by the sound of Chris screaming.

Mickey bent over Chris, who was yelling over and over again, “No, no. Don’t let him do it.”

He shook Chris awake. “What’s the matter, babe?”

“I was having a nightmare.”

“Can you tell me about it?”

“I was on the operating table and Dr. Shively had my dick in one hand and a scalpel in the other saying that he was going to cut it off…. It was horrible.”

The intercom beeped and a voice said, “Is everything all right?”

“Yes, Ma’am. He was having a nightmare, but it’s okay now.”

“Would you like a sleeping pill, Mr. Bottoms?”

“Yes, please,” Chris said.

A nurse brought Chris a pill, which he swallowed and chased with a glass of water, then he and Mickey went back to sleep. The rest of the night passed by without interruption.

They told Dr. Cobb about the nightmare when he made his rounds the next morning, and he prescribed a sleeping pill for Chris as needed.

Mickey stayed in the hospital with Chris every night after that. Chris had at least one nightmare every night, and occasionally he had two of them.
