Chapter Sixteen

Eden

I stare at the lines on my notebook paper for so long that all the thin blue lines start to disappear. My head is in too much of an uproar to be in this damn meeting, but I’ve missed enough work. Given my track record in these events, I sit the furthest away from Maverick and pull the trashcan up by the table leg nearby me.

I’m prepared for anything and everything.

The lawyer, an older woman with thin metal frames around her round glasses, sits next to Hunter, who separates me from Maverick at the other end of the table. I greet the lawyer politely, her intricately woven pants suit like a beige ensemble with red and gray threads woven through the fibers.

“I’m Eden,” I say, shaking her firm palm. “I love your suit.”

She offers a mature smile and goes back to adjusting the stacks of papers before her. “Thank you. I’m Mindy Ross. I’m the lawyer on duty who got stuck with this terrible task today.”

“Easy, now,” Maverick grumbles under his breath. “Don’t let anyone know you’re actually happy to be here at work, Mindy.” He snickers slightly, everyone’s mood in the room lightening. “Sorry, couldn’t help myself.”

“You’re like my grandson, Maverick,” Mindy says, without skipping a beat. “The one that runs in circles on the soccer field but still gets an orange and juice box after the game.”

Hunter struggles not to burst out laughing. “Damn, she’s cold.”

“I like her already,” I quip.

Maverick snorts a false laugh while we wait for the three on trial to come into the conference room. “Yeah, yeah. Very funny.”

Mindy sits back, holding her hands over her lap while she leans closer toward me. “Almost as funny as my grandson trying to play soccer. I think his coaches just placate him to get it over with. If I put a little rope around his hips and tied the other end to a post, he would entertain himself for hours, dear. Very similar to Maverick Locke. A man of strict repetition, even if it gets him nowhere but in a hole.”

We both can’t help but laugh aloud. Not just because it’s funny, which it is, but because it’s true.

Maverick leans forward, shooting me a cautious look.

I shrug it off immediately. “What? It was funny.”

Mindy gives him back the same look, but stronger. “Go entertain yourself, boss. I’m trying to befriend the HR lady. Maybe if she comes around to being my friend, she can show me where the good snacks are in her office.”

Maverick grumbles his reply into his palm. “Maybe I cut funding to the fig bars. See if you still work here after that, Mindy.”

Everyone bursts into friendly, bantering laughter.

For once, I can’t help but relax at work. I know I’m not supposed to find him attractive or want to be with the man at the CEO’s desk, but I can’t help it. He makes conversation so easy. He brings a smile to my face every time he talks.

He’s a bit stubborn and frustrating at times, but I still enjoy being in a room with him.
