Chapter 9

Dakota

“Do you have the latest numbers from the Cyber Tank campaign?” Cooper asks.

“Huh?” I say stupidly, unable to hide the fact that I’ve been zoning out at my desk. I never do that. Or at least, I never used to. Before him. The infuriating, arrogant, beautiful, sad, and surprisingly thoughtful man of my filthy dreams. The man who is making his way into my heart despite my best efforts to keep things casual.

“Dakota?” Cooper says, his voice bringing me back into the present. I stare up into blue eyes that are so much like my Asher’s, except a little bit lighter. Not that Asher is mine. He’s made that very clear. “Everything ok?”

“Yeah. Yes. Sorry. Just tired, I guess,” I lie.

Cooper furrows his brow and studies me for a few seconds before giving me an easy smile. “It’s ok. I know you’ve been working hard on this account, putting in extra hours and staying late.”

I nod and print out the report he asked for. It’s true, I have been staying late almost every night this week, but it’s only about fifty percent for work-related reasons. The other fifty-percent is because Asher is gone on a two-week trip and I miss him more than I should.

We’ve been meeting up in hotel rooms across the city for the last three weeks. He’s gone on a few short trips, usually two or three nights at most, but we always meet up as soon as he gets back to the city. The sex is off the charts, every single time. I thought maybe the novelty of it would wear off after a while, but if anything, the chemistry only seems to grow stronger. The more we get to know each other’s bodies, the better it gets. Which is saying something, because those first few times were absolutely mind-blowing.

Asher hasn’t spent the night with me since that first time. When he walked out that second night, I swear I saw regret and some sort of secret pain in his eyes when he looked back at me through the crack in the door. It made my heart squeeze up painfully in my chest to see him in such obvious turmoil. I wanted to get out of bed and hug him, kiss it all better, and then hold him while we drifted off to sleep. But that wouldn’t go over well.

After that night, he always left right after we were done having sex. Then he started staying a little bit longer, sometimes ordering room service and then taking me again. The last few nights we spent together before he left on his latest trip, he actually stayed in bed with me till I fell asleep. It was almost perfect.

But now he’s been gone for a week and we haven’t talked. Not once. It’s not like that’s unusual. We don’t normally text or call when he’s away on business, but then again, he’s never been away for this long. Some naïve part of me thought maybe he’d miss me too and reach out, but that’s silly.
