Chapter Eight

After picking up her BMW at the gallery, Kathleen drove slowly through the Capitol Hill streets toward Foster’s studio, knowing where she was going but not wanting to arrive.

Severe trepidation was her companion. There could be only one reason he wanted her to come to the studio. He’d used the same words the last time she’d lived this day. A surprise! A terrible surprise, she thought, as awful as opening Pandora’s box and unleashing pestilence and sorrow upon the world.

But then, she remembered, there was hope. The last entity to be released from Pandora’s box was hope.

Kathleen clung to that thought. Hope. After all, this time she would not be taken by surprise. Surely, this time she would react more rationally.

As she drove nearer and nearer, her tension increased. She circled the block twice before entering the alley and parking behind Foster’s van.

He opened the door to his carriage house and leaned against the door frame. “What’s the secret password?”

The same words! She was dumbfounded, unable to speak.

“Come on, Kathleen, nobody enters my kingdom without a password.”

“Pandora,” she whispered. “Hope.”

This time, when she tried to sidle past him, he dropped his arm, blocking her path. “Halt.”

“I gave you a password,” she said.

He coiled his arm around her and pulled her inside. “But you didn’t give me a kiss.”

This time was different! Gratefully, she embraced him. When their lips met, she kissed him fiercely, purposefully. She willed him to care about her, to love her as she loved him, to understand.

His body reacted. His hands stroked the fabric of her light sundress, caressing, pulling her against his arousal.

When she leaned her head back, her lips parted. She was panting, gasping. He fitted her body exactly to his. Wonderful, she thought, he felt so wonderful. So very masculine, so very right. She longed for their clothing to melt away, for their bodies to become as one. Now was the right time. Now, this minute, she wanted to make love. A love that would last forever.

“Kathleen,” he said, “we have to stop.”

“Please, don’t.”

“If I don’t stop now,” he warned, “I won’t be able to.”

Sweet assent was on the tip of her tongue. Yes, she wanted to say. Yes, make love to me now. She ached with the need for him. Her breasts felt heavy. Her nipples were painfully sensitive. An unceasing throbbing echoed in her loins. “Don’t stop.”

“What about dinner?”

“Don’t care.” She wanted him now...before anything terrible happened.

“What about my surprise?” He swept her hair off her forehead and kissed her brow, then the tip of her nose.

She stood waiting with her eyelids closed for him to taste her mouth once again. But his embrace loosened, and he patted her bottom. “Why don’t you slip behind the screen and take off your clothes?”

“What?”

“Well, I was going to show you the portrait and the two smaller studies, but there’s something not quite right about one of them. A couple of brush strokes.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I want you to pose, Kathleen.”

She’d just offered herself to him, and he was thinking about his art.
