Jack honked when he pulled up to my house. I slipped my coat on and jogged out the front door. It was snowing again, which made me think of Buddy.
I grabbed the passenger door handle of the Honda Accord and pulled. Nothing happened.
“Sorry,” Jack said from inside the car, and then I heard the click of the automatic unlock button.
I tried again, and this time it worked. “Thanks for giving me a ride.” I climbed in and put on my seat belt. “How’s Buddy?”
“He’s a kleptomaniac.”
I laughed. “What does that mean?”
The Accord bumped up and down as Jack made a three-point turn and headed back down my driveway.
“This morning, I found one of Zoe’s headbands, my mom’s socks, and my grandmother’s brush stashed under my bed.”
“Interesting collection of items,” I said. “If anything goes missing, you know where to check.”
“True.” The snow started coming down harder as we drove.
“What’s the forecast for tonight?” I asked.
“They are guess-timating three or four inches of snow. No ice.”
“Do you ever get the feeling that the weathermen just throw darts at a board covered with different winter forecasts?”
“It’s supposed to be a science,” Jack said. “But it doesn’t seem very exact.”
Betty’s was packed, which was good, because I’d rather be busy than bored. Mrs. Banks made an appearance, and I gave her the exact piece of pie she requested. She almost seemed disappointed I didn’t argue with her. From my vantage point at the dessert counter, I could see through the windows on the front doors. The snow never let up. Three to four inches was probably a severe understatement.
Jack seemed to be one of the busiest people in the room, ringing out a never-ending line of diners and handling carry-out orders. Through all of it, he smiled and nodded. Was he happier because of Buddy? It was probably nice to go home to a dog that was excited to see you every day. Zoe had told me that after school, Buddy licked Jack’s nose, like he was cleaning it. He didn’t do that to anyone else, just Jack. It must be some form of exclusive puppy affection.
I knew I couldn’t have a pet, because there wouldn’t be anyone at home to let it out half the time, and animals needed company. Maybe a cat wouldn’t mind having the run of the house when no one was home. Heck, I could probably adopt a cat, and my parents wouldn’t notice for a month.
When it was half an hour until the end of my shift, I walked over to Jack. “I need to place a carry-out order because there is a severe lack of groceries at my house.”
