Chapter Twelve

Bella only half-listened through her lecture classes. Her mind kept drifting away, and not to a happy place. Somehow, she managed to get through the day, but she still felt uneasy, unsettled, unprepared.

I know, she told herself. I need to go practice. That will help.

Swinging by her house, she went to her side of the bed, pulled out the Walther PPK .22 Nathan had bought her. She unloaded the magazine, made sure the chamber was empty, and stripped it apart to clean it as he’d shown her. She’d found she liked the smell of gun oil, the attention to detail required as she carefully cleaned each piece, then reassembled. She’d also learned that if you were a good enough shot, a .22 round could be just as deadly as a bigger one.

She attached the trigger guard, loaded the gun and ammo into their carrying case, got back into her car, and drove to Quantico. With a wave to Barney, one of the front-gate guards she’d known for years, she parked and walked toward the stately gray building housing the gun range.

“Hey Bella, how are you?” It was Mark manning the range this afternoon.

“I’m good, Mark,” she replied. “You?”

“Yep,” he answered, checking his log. “Number ten’s open, that all right?”

“Great,” she said. “Thanks.”

He handed her the requisite ear and eye protection, then checked her case to make sure what she’d brought in was within guidelines and had been transported safely. Once he confirmed she’d already put in the earplugs, he pressed the buzzer for her to enter through the door at the end of the room and motioned her through.

She made her way to lane ten, nodding in recognition to several of the other lane’s occupants as she passed.

Upon reaching the lane, she set her case in front of her. She got out her oversized earmuff-style headphones and put them on. She’d discovered through multiple trips here that the little plug inserts weren’t quite enough to prevent a headache following target practice.

She swiveled behind her to select a target to aim for. Hmm. Standard bullseye again? She considered.

Nope. I think, for what might be coming at some point, I want to use the silhouette this time.

She shuddered a bit at the scenario that thought had implied, then straightened her shoulders and selected a silhouette target anyway. Turning back, she affixed it in place with the clips, then pressed the button to move it away from her to the three-yard mark.

Now she unpacked her weapon. Taking care to keep the muzzle pointed down range, she took off the trigger guard, then set the gun on the little shelf in front of her. Bella opened her box of ammunition, picked up the magazine, loaded ten live rounds to start. She picked the gun up in her right hand, slid the magazine in with her left until it clicked into place. Last, she pulled back the slide, then let it travel forward, which chambered the first round.

This first set would be done right-handed, her naturally dominant side.
