CHAPTER 6

Thankfully, getting out of the house proved as easy as getting into it, but I spent the whole time worried about how I was going to give Silas the slip. Unlike many of Carl’s wolves, Silas was both smart and cautious. The combination meant he rarely gave me a hard time like the rest of them. It also meant he was a lot harder to fool. I considered heading in the opposite direction, but without the rubber mat, I’d be in for a shock. Plus, one side led to Carl, and another to a side street where I’d be more likely to be spotted. If I trekked out the back and headed for the mountains, I could potentially lose Silas. However, I would also lose my ride.

I fished my cell phone out of my bag to check the time. Ten minutes. The only app Carl had loaded was the one he used to track my location. But last night as I lay awake in my room, I’d downloaded a ride sharing app. I’d typed in a location two blocks in the opposite direction of where the guys waited in the SUV and arranged pick up time for ten minutes from now. I’d prepaid with the credit card I’d lifted from Tony yesterday. If Creed didn’t hunt Tony down, I hoped at least Carl would think he aided my escape.

I didn’t have long before my window closed. My only shot was getting out the way I came in, and that meant going past Silas. I racked my brain for a way out. Maybe I can fake a stitch in my side or an injury of some kind. If I gave the stone to Silas, maybe he’d rush it back to Carl. All I needed was a few minutes head start to have a chance at escaping. My mind made up, I adjusted my backpack. I jogged toward the spot I’d left Silas, trying not to think about the silencer on the end of his gun.

I heard the dogs before I saw them, their low growls winding through the trees. Shit. I should’ve used more tranquilizer. I’d been so afraid of accidentally killing them, I’d used the dosage recommended for a medium dog. As I caught sight of them hunched over something, I realized I should have gone for the extra-large breed dose. It wasn’t until I was closer that I saw what garnered their full attention. One of the dogs had Silas by the thigh, while the other was going for his throat. Silas had both hands up shielding his face. The gun was nowhere in sight.

Why doesn’t he shift?

With Silas distracted, I had my chance. I ran for the fence. As I got closer, I could see the damage the dogs were inflicting. The dogs paid no attention to me, intent on the man curled on the ground between them.

Shift. Shift. Shift. I chanted it like a mantra in my head as I ran. Despite the viciousness of the attack, Silas remained human.
