CHAPTER 7

SMOOTH, tan leather of the car’s bucket seat hugged Clyde in a secure embrace as Bonnie gunned the red Ferrari around the exit curve and onto the Merritt Parkway. Wind whipped past the windshield of the convertible, making conversation difficult despite the fact that it didn’t even touch Clyde’s hair. The G’s pushed him deeper into the seat and against the passenger door.

Tires squealed.

Clyde gasped.

“Shit,” Bonnie yelled. “Awesome!”

Clyde whooped as they powered through the curve, then looked over his shoulder to eye the sporadic traffic. The flow of cars was thicker and faster than anything he’d ever experienced out West, and the drivers seemed more aggressive than even in Chicago.

“Having fun?” Bonnie yelled next to him.

“Yeah!”

This was better than the stuffy country club by far. The road wound and turned unlike any highway he’d ever seen, overcoming the rolling hills of the southern Connecticut landscape. A narrow opening loomed ahead of them – a bridge, arches of old-fashioned stone – the thunder of their own engine reverberated as they passed through.

“Loud,” he said, straining his voice. “But fun!”

“You want the top up?” Bonnie asked over the road noise.

“Too much trouble!”

Bonnie pushed a button. A roof slid over their heads. When he closed their windows, the absence of sound was almost deafening.

“Wow,” Clyde said, realizing too late he didn’t have to shout anymore. “That’s pretty slick. And fast.”

“Ferrari California,” Bonnie said with a pleased smile. “All the comfort of home with a performance package. Eight cylinders, decent mileage for a car like this, and suitable only for lovely evenings and pleasant company.”

Clyde blinked. A car like that must’ve cost a fortune. “You must be a serious dance star, with a car like this.” He didn’t know much about Bonnie, but despite all that, the warm feeling of deep liking in his chest surprised him. Hell, he’d been fatally attracted from the time he’d spotted him several hours ago. And that tango... the kiss from Clyde’s former closet-sized room still tingled. And now this.

“Oh, it’s not mine.” Bonnie chuckled in a self-deprecating way. “I live in the City. A car in Manhattan is horribly expensive, plus I don’t need one. Mom lets me drive this when I’m up here. But only when the weather’s nice.”

Clyde turned in his seat, which was no mean task. The seatbelt held him snug within the leather bucket seat. “This is your mom’s car?”

“Uh-huh.” The smile that lit up Bonnie’s face warmed Clyde to his toes. That, and his long, lithe neck. Smooth, kissable skin. He could imagine the taste, the feel of it.

“She used to race Formula 3 back in the day,” Bonnie said. “She did okay in her division until her first crash. She says her survival instinct prevailed, so she became a lawyer instead.”

“Wow.” Regina Rinaldi, a race car driver? He’d never have guessed. “You have an interesting family.”

“Yeah,” Bonnie said. “Old bootlegging money turned respectable in regular business.” He passed a slower sedan and found his place in the right lane. “Just as well we put the roof up.
