MITCHUM STOOD IN THE middle of the cul-de-sac at the end of Geoff's driveway. He was confident that no wolves were within earshot, but even so he spoke in muted tones once he'd connected with The Manager. He recounted the witches' side of things as concisely as he was able. Once he finished speaking, the silence on the other end dragged on for so long he started to worry the call had been dropped.
"Sir?" he asked.
"I'm still here, Charles." The Manager's tone was musing. "It's a fascinating insight, but ultimately it doesn't alter our plan. As this... as Evelyn said, obviously it's been done before, therefore it can be done again. If these two are unwilling or unable to provide, we shall continue our search."
"And in the meantime, what do we do about Michel? He's still out there somewhere, and I don't think any subsequent encounters with him are going to go any better for us."
"As to that, I'm glad you called when you did. I was just going over some surveillance reports, and I found something noteworthy. We might have a lead on where Michel sleeps during the daytime."
Mitchum's heart skipped a beat. By all accounts, Michel was still beholden to his vampiric side and only hunted at night. That was the only break they'd caught so far. He looked up reflexively. It was late morning; they still had hours of daylight ahead of them.
"Shall I inform the wolves?" he asked.
The Manager seemed to consider this for a moment, but when the other man spoke, Mitchum could imagine his shaking head. "At this time, no. We don't know if this will pan out, and we can't risk Cooper trying to destroy the creature if he sees an opportunity. But if we can pinpoint where Michel goes to ground it will allow us to place a trap whenever the witches are ready."
Mitchum pressed his lips together, keeping his doubts to himself. Since this last encounter, he was even less certain that The Manager's plan would work. However, the man was still his superior. "Alright, so who's going with me?" Even if the vampire was dormant, Mitchum didn't relish the idea of going without some kind of backup.
"Bring Taylor with you. I'll send Lewis to relieve him. You two come and pick me up and we'll go together."
It was all Mitchum could do not to drop his phone. "You? Sir, are you sure that's a good idea?" He was so surprised that he didn't stop to consider whether the question might be insulting.
If The Manager was insulted, it didn't come through in his tone. If anything, he sounded mildly amused. "It is hard to say if this is a 'good' idea, but we find ourselves with a depressingly shallow bench, now that three of the agents who were at the National Zoo are out of commission. In any case, I intend for us only to scout, and we will be long gone before nightfall."
Mitchum did a mental rundown of the agents who were present when Michel returned, and grimaced.
