Chapter 31

Verity asked, “Where are we going?”

I looked over at her. It was only two of us in the truck now. The old man had told me where Mohawk lived. Then I took him to a doctor. A private doctor, just like he wanted. There wasn’t much else we could do. He needed medical attention. Maybe it would have been better for him to go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital, but he refused. I told him he was crazy, that the Isabella would find him again. He didn’t care. He just wanted to get fixed up and go home. So we left him at the front door and drove off.

“We’re going after the crocodile,” I said.

“At some strip club owners house?”

“That’s where the crocodile is.”

“What about Noah?” she asked.

“What about him?” I said. “We don’t know where he is.”

“But we know who has him,” she said. “Your werewolf friends. Why don’t we go deal with them?”

“Simple,” I said. “Because I don’t know where they are.”

“Well, start looking for them. You must have some idea of where the werewolves are.”

I looked at her. “They’re not that easy to find.”

Verity snorted. “C’mon, they’re werewolves. They’re big and hairy. How hard are they to find?”

“Very hard,” I said. “They look just like regular humans. And there are over four million regular humans in Melbourne. How are you gonna find them? It’d be like looking for a specific grain of sand on a beach.”

Verity said nothing.

The rain had stopped. The truck tires hissed on the wet road. Warm, moist night air flowed in through the open windows.

After a few minutes of silence, Verity said: “Simple. We ask the old woman.”

“Why would she tell us? She’s not too friendly at the moment.”

“Then we make her tell us.”

“How? You saw that wand of hers. We were lucky to get out of there.”

“Threaten her with that gun of yours.”

“What? Stick the gun in her face and say: tell me where the werewolves are or I’ll shoot?”

“Yeah, that’d work.”

“And she calls my bluff and says nothing. Then what? I’m not about to kill an unarmed woman, and she knows that. And anyway, dead women tell no tales.”

“We could offer her something. Money?”

I said, “Maybe. You got any money? I mean serious money, enough to get her talking”

Verity said, “No. Do you?”

“Nope.”

“Then maybe we just reason with her, convince her it’s the best thing to do.”

“I ain’t going anywhere near that woman. She’s psychotic. But anyway, she doesn’t care what happens to your Noah. She’s more likely to want the wolves to kill him. All she cares about is that crocodile.”

Verity went quiet again, then said, “I don’t care about that stupid crocodile.”

“You should. People have killed for it.”

“So why should I care?”

“Because people want it real bad. That makes it powerful.”

She paused a moment, then said, “I’m surprised you don’t want revenge.”

“On the crazy woman?”

She said, “No, on the werewolves. The way I see it, they’ve tried to kill you a few times now. I thought you wanted to get even.
