Chapter 14

The wisps danced in the trees, casting eerie shadows across our path. I shivered, the darkness heavier than I remembered. Too quiet. Even the constant drizzle couldn’t mask the unnatural silence.

“Are we there yet?” Adam asked.

I chuckled. It was easy to forget that he was so young given his strength and usual calm demeanor.

“Not yet,” Ramon said. “We aren’t exactly sure when we’ll arrive. We don’t know where Malvessa is.”

Thirty seconds later.

“Are we there yet?”

I snickered as Ramon explained again that it would take as long as it takes. We weren’t heading for a destination; we were seeking the faerie queen.

I was a little surprised Malvessa didn’t show up the moment we set foot in her domain. I expected she’d confront us straight away. Why hadn’t she? I knew it wouldn’t be a happy reunion.

Muggs tilted his head, listening. “Something’s coming.”

I heard nothing at all, but I readied my wand anyway. We weren’t there to fight, but Malvessa didn’t know that. We needed to be ready to defend ourselves.

Something fell from the trees and covered all of us. “What the hell?”

Ramon grunted as he thrashed against ropes. “It’s a goddamn net!”

Muggs stood in the middle of us, laughing, the net resting over his head. He was the tallest of the bunch. Meanwhile, Willie fluttered about, darting from one side of the net to the next, trying to find a way out.

“Who’s out there!” I shouted. “This damn thing won’t hold us forever.”

I grabbed the ropes and pulled. I thought I’d tear through it, but the ropes cinched tighter. I thrashed against the net as high-pitched cackles erupted around us. Fork-wielding clurichauns poured from the trees, their shrieks piercing my ears. I’d met a band of clurichauns before. They were annoying, but mostly harmless.

“Well, well, what have we here?” one slurred, prodding me with his dulled fork. I bared my fangs with a hiss. The idiot just grinned wider.

“Happy catch! Happy catch!” they chanted, stumbling around us. The stench of faerie whiskey burned my nose.

Ramon clutched Adam close as the clurichauns circled us, singing and dancing. Anger simmered in my veins. We didn’t have time for this drunken idiocy.

“Enough!” I shouted, silencing their inane song. “Let us pass or you’ll regret it.”

The clurichauns blinked at me, mouths agape. One with wild red hair and a forked beard stepped forward.

“Mercy?” He tugged at his beard. “Never thought I’d see you back here.”

I tilted my head. “McRory?”

“Indeed! Are you a fool? You barely got out of here alive the last time!”

“I need to see Malvessa,” I said. “It’s urgent.”

McRory’s bushy brows rose. “Come to finish the job, have you? Sending her away wasn’t enough?”

I clenched my jaw. He didn’t understand.

“There are bigger things at stake now,” I said. “It concerns the faeries still on earth. Not only Oberon, but her former court as well.”

McRory peered through the net, studying my companions. “Wee Willie Winker? Is that you? And Ramon, the vampire-turned faerie?”

Willie charged at the net, but it held him back. “Let us out, McRory!”

I tilted my head.
