Simon was once again disoriented when he woke up the next morning. He was aching from head to toe, especially his arse and hips. Opening sleepy eyes, he spied Tobias lying next to him, his arm carelessly tossed over Simon’s waist, and the memory of the previous night came flooding back to him.
“Good morning,” Tobias murmured, peering at him through half-lidded eyes.
“Morning. …So, last night really happened, huh?” Simon asked, running his hands through his tangled curls.
Tobias rolled his eyes. “It would appear so.”
“Wow.” Simon was suddenly shy. He hadn’t expected any of this to happen and was unprepared for the aftermath.
“Are you in pain?” Tobias asked.
“A little,” he admitted.
Tobias leaned over and opened the drawer next to the bed again. He pulled out a crystal potion bottle that was a little more than half-filled with a creamy substance.
“Turn over,” he commanded.
Simon listened and felt a cool touch on his wounds as Tobias began to massage whatever was in the bottle on them. It was so gentle, it was hard to believe it was the same man as last night touching him.
“There,” Tobias said after a moment. “Give it ten minutes and those will be completely healed.”
“Thank you,” Simon said, turning his head to the side and resting it on his crossed arms. Tobias was sitting at the edge of the bed now, his body in perfect view. “This isn’t going to change anything, is it?”
“You mean am I going to start being affectionate with you in public? Never. Will we be able to let off steam frequently during this ordeal? Most certainly,” Tobias replied. “I have never allowed my sex life to interfere with my real life, and I don’t intend to start now.” He looked over at Simon and gave a small smile. “The potion needs to set in your skin before you can shower. Breakfast will be ready by then.”
He exited the basement, leaving Simon slightly mystified.
How could he have been so passionate less than eight hours ago, and now was back to the same cold man he’d always known? It didn’t make sense, but Simon supposed he was glad. It didn’t do to get emotionally attached to someone you had to kill someday soon.
He just had to enjoy this time with Tobias while it lasted. Because if he knew anything, it’s that peace was an illusion and happiness was a fleeting bird you had to catch with your bare hands. It would cut and scratch and claw, not wanting to be captured, but well worth it when it had been grasped.
