Chapter 22

‘Come in!’ Gabriel Reyes greeted them in his usual friendly manner. Fielding and Summers had been collected from their apartment at 8am two days after their initial meeting with him. They looked and felt a lot cleaner and presentable. This wasn’t lost on their new employer.

‘Has my friend Viktor been treating you well?’ he asked, casting a glance over to the Russian who had already made himself comfortable on the sofa by the coffee table. This time he didn’t pick up one of the magazines but was sitting with hands clasped on his lap ready to hear the conversation with the new recruits.

‘Yes, he has, thanks,’ Summers told him, forcing a smile.

‘And you, Sally?’ Reyes rose from his seat and made his way around to her side of the desk and perched on the end of it. ‘How are you?’

She cast a glance over towards Summers and then up to the man now sitting right above her. This time she was prepared for him and any attempts to disarm her. ‘I’m good as well.’ He reached over and took hold of her right hand, and bringing it up to his lips he planted a gentle kiss on the back of it. His eyes wandered over to her partner sitting beside her.

‘Not to worry,’ he told him as if reassuring him that he was not trying to make a move on his girlfriend. ‘This is just me being a gentleman.’ And with that he let go of her hand and walked back to his chair. ‘Right,’ he said sitting himself firmly down. ‘Let’s get down to business!’

Over the next half hour Fielding and Summers sat and listened to what the business entailed. They were required to travel across to Germany and each drive a car back to the UK. The cars, of course, weren’t just new vehicles being imported into the country. They had a hidden cargo – mostly cocaine.

Then Reyes explained that he had arranged passports and driving licences for them. So not only was what they were getting into a drug import business, but there were also links to fraud in the form of counterfeit documentation and false identities.

Fielding could only speculate what line of work those who could not drive were destined for: theft and prostitution were two of the many options which sprung to mind. The only thing both she and Summers could do was to go along with it and bide their time whilst gathering any further intelligence.

She knew that Burton would be thinking the same way: he wasn’t going to blow the whistle on the operation after doing just one run for them; they would have to gain Reyes’s and Bikovic’s trust by proving themselves reliable. And whilst doing that, dig a little deeper to discover what organisation was behind the whole racket. It was going to be a bumpy ride, but she was prepared.
