Chapter Seventeen

Dion

Tension coils in my muscles like a snake, ready to strike. When the lights go out, I growl at the door, something I’ve never been so undignified as to do. Something primal in me rises, though, and I know that whatever is here is dangerous. I have to protect myself and my friends against it.

Steps pace the hallway, and I consider opening the door. Something rumbles outside, the motor of a car. The steps stop, and the air crackles with magic.

I take a careful step toward the door, then another. When I put my hand on the handle, the hairs on my neck rise. My ears strain for any sound, but whatever is out there hasn’t taken a step.

When the lights turn back on, I fling the door open, hoping to use the surprise to my advantage.

There’s nothing out there, though, and the crackling energy in the room dissipates.

Sam and Sebastian exit their rooms an instant after me, looking around in confusion.

“What the hell is going on?” Sam asks, his hands clutched around a fire poker. He was more prepared than Sebastian and me. Neither of us thought to grab a weapon of any sort.

I shake my head. “I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s over.” I stride out toward the main hall, sniffing the air. Luce was here, and I recall the text from before. Demitri caught her before she could sleep walk right out the window. There’s something following us. Following her. The moment she left the property, so did that thing.

“We need to go,” I say.

Sebastian tilts his head. “Where? We don’t know where Luce and Demitri are headed.”

Sam adds, “And someone could be tracking our phones. If they found us that easily, then we can’t risk anything.”

I nod. They’re both right. I don’t have any idea how we’re going to find Luce and Demitri now that they’ve gone, but maybe that’s a good thing.

“We need to speak with the vampire council,” I say finally. “If the hunters are after us, maybe there’s something they can do.”

Sebastian steps toward me. “And tell them what? That we’re mated to a witch? We’ll be executed.”

“Maybe not,” Sam says. “Not if we have a common enemy, anyway. If the prophecy Luce’s mom mentioned is true, then she’s the deadliest of all witches. She could end the war.”

Sebastian frowns. “That could be what it means by end of days. Determining the fate of witches and vampires.”

I laugh incredulously. “Or it could mean the apocalypse. Are you hearing yourselves?” They don’t seem to understand the stakes of going to the Vampire Council. They’re being so blasé about it.

“It’s not like we have a lot of options,” Sebastian says. “I understand the risk better than anyone, but we need to do something.”

I growl for the second time in my life, twice in one night. “You don’t understand anything. You haven’t lost anyone to this war.” I usually try to forget about Ursi, but right now, I recall how invincible we thought our love to be.
