Chapter Twelve—Sophia

The first rays of the morning sun did little to dispel the darkness that had settled in my heart. I couldn’t remember ever feeling lower than I did at that moment. These feelings had nothing to do with my aching body and sticky eyes.

The events of the previous night replayed in my mind in a relentless loop, each moment a vivid reminder of the danger posed by the entity within River Run.

I felt a deep, gnawing worry, not just for Evie, whose condition seemed to worsen with each passing hour, but for my entire family. The entity's malevolence was palpable, a dark cloud that hung over us, threatening to engulf us in its shadow.

The house, once a symbol of heritage and family, now felt like a trap, its walls closing in on us, suffused with an aura of dread and fear. Each creak and whisper were a sinister note in the symphony of terror that played out in its halls. The thought of my children, so vulnerable and exposed to this malevolent force, sent waves of fear coursing through me. I was their mother, their protector, and yet, I felt utterly powerless against this unseen enemy. Why did we ever come here?

As I sat at the kitchen table, a sense of resolve began to take shape amidst the turmoil of my thoughts. Mike, who had witnessed the terror of the previous night, sat beside me, his face etched with the same fear and determination that I felt.

"We can't do this on our own," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "We need help, Mike. External help."

Mike nodded, his agreement immediate and firm. "I'll support whatever you decide, Sophia. We need to do whatever it takes to protect our family. I can’t call out of work today. Are you going to be okay here with the children? Why don’t you take them to the movies or something?"

I stared at Mike like he had two heads. What was he thinking? Did he really want me to take Evie, who was having seizures, to a movie theater? I was already ducking and dodging phone calls from the school. I hadn’t even formally withdrawn Evelyn from school.

“We’ll do what we have to do, right? I’ll call Matilda and ask her for a referral. She has to know someone.”

Mike nodded in agreement. There was a mix of relief and apprehension in making this decision. The thought of bringing a stranger into our home, into this situation, was daunting. Yet, the reality was clear—we were outmatched, and our understanding of the supernatural was limited. Seeking help was not just a choice; it was a necessity.

I picked up the phone and dialed Matilda, a family friend who had dabbled in the paranormal. If it hadn’t been for her and Lee the last time, we would have long been forced out of the house.

The phone rang, each tone echoing in the tense silence of the room. When Matilda answered, her voice was a mix of concern and weariness.
